https://themaritimepost.com/2021/03/24/video-ultra-large-containership-runs-aground-long-traffic-jam-in-suez-canal/It seems that we are discovering what the right size is for a containership.
On Feb 1, 2013 The 14,770 TUE Containership Emma Maersk suffered an engineroom flooding incident. Amazingly enough, the crew was able to bring the vessel around and dock it at a container terminal before the generators went under water. There was no blockage of the Canal.

There was an extensive investigation which can be downloaded here: https://dmaib.com/reports/2013/emma-maersk-flooding-on-1-february-2013/ Lots of juicy pictures.

Questions are answered on the following link, such as:
Could the mega containership Ever Given capsize?
Could her hull crack and spill oil like the grounded bunker Wakashio did in Mauritius?
What are the worst case and best case scenarios?

(36,457 posts)Why is EVERGREEN painted on the ship & not EVER GIVEN?

(1,896 posts)The fact that it was done to confuse us is indisputable. Especially to confuse me.
The truth is that the company, Evergreen, christens vessels with names like Ever Giver, Ever Spring, Ever Valor,,,
Ever Giver is painted on the stern.

(2,636 posts)That picture...easily worth a thousand words.
The size of that ship is unreal.

(1,896 posts)How much it weighs isn't imaginable, and neither is something that massive coming to a dead stop. At sea it takes some ships miles to stop - this is the equivalent of running as fast as I can into a solid wall. In addition to the injuries crew members sustained damage to the ship could certainly be the end of it.

(1,896 posts)The canal is 66 feet deep and the capacity of a ship is measured by how many 20 foot long containers it can carry. This ship has the capacity of about 20,000 containers. If any went in the water they are being held by Davy Jones for now.
Over / under betting windows are open. You can set the number.

(2,636 posts)When I was 19, 20 maybe, we were waterskiing on the COlorado RIver, coming back from Havasu. Two boats, racing along. One with an inboard, and one with an in and out.
one glided right over the sandbar a foot or so beneath the surface of the river. the other, containing my friends, myself, and my freshly opened beer, came to a screeching halt rightfuckingnow and I flew from the back of the boat to the bow. Kid on the bow flew into the river. He spilled his beer. I spilled nary a drop. I am a professional, after all.
The earth is quite an impediment.
The scale on that thing is just incomprehensible.
