After getting arrested, jailed, and charged with raiding the US Capitol on January 6 alongside a large pro-Trump mob, one rioter filed a request to speed up the hearing for a unique reason: to finish his college exams at UCLA.
Christian Secor, 22, was arrested on February 16 and indicted on 10 separate violations by a federal grand jury after prosecutors identified him from tips and news reports showing him sitting in the Chair of the Presiding Officer of the Senate, where then-Vice President Mike Pence sat earlier that day to certify the election.
In filings presented in court on March 16, Secor's lawyer argued that as a first-time offender he should be able to return to university to complete his final exams. In response, US prosecutors pointed to text messages recovered from a phone that Secor destroyed after breaching the Capitol.
In the texts, it appears that Secor texted an unknown number, asking if they wanted to "hang out" and discuss "future operations." The message's recipient agreed, but declined to expand more over text message as it was "being kept ultra secret."

(82,849 posts)Getting arrested for a crime can really mess up your life! Now imagine if you truly hadn't done anything wrong, and languished in prison for years until exculpatory evidence finally surfaced to exonerate you. In Mr. Secor's case, though, there's solid evidence that he was involved in the insurrection, pre-planning and coordinating with others to try to overthrow the government of the United States by violence. Tough luck, pally.
Read an appalling story of justice miscarried here.

You should have thought of that when you joined the fucking murderous criminal mob that day, dude.
I hope this big blunder STAYS on your record and follows you and ruins your prospects for the rest of your life, dude. I hope youre scarred for life for this.

(15,936 posts)Wouldn't you agree. His whiteness buys him certain privileges don't ya know. He didn't mean no harm and his insurrection activities didn't win the day and look democracy was restored.
Judge: Did your client Christian Secor participate in these activities that was trying to overthrow Democracy? Did he go there fully willing to participate in this insurrection? Does he know who WON the ELECTION in November?
Lawyer: Yes, YES, I don't know if he actually knows or realizes who won the election last November.
Judge: I can not in my judgment offer any leniency provided your client was involved in trying to overthrow the election and hence Democracy. DENIED

(21,945 posts)It's amazing really, but then again if you look at their idol, it's not surprising. Years of Trump's very public wrongdoing has drilled into them that you're permitted to commit any crime as long as it's for the higher purpose of "owning the libs."
Cheating charities? You're a powerful businessman! Bribery and corruption at the highest level? Republican Senators will give you a pass! Grabbing women? Shows you're a real man! Dodging taxes? Means you're smart!
And now here they all are in court, blinking as if waking from a dream and saying, "Wait... you mean I have to go to prison for storming the Capitol Building?"
...as Trump takes their money and goes golfing.

Yes, the above is all obvious sarcasm.
This guy really seems clueless. His attempt to exercise the privilege to complete his exams suggests he's not really the kind of person UCLA intended to represent the university as having graduated from the institution.

In federal court on Wednesday, a judge heard arguments about whether a 22-year-old UCLA student, who took inspiration from far-right extremists, should be released from federal custody pending his criminal trial for allegedly storming the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6.
Federal judge Trevor McFadden, a Trump appointee and a former Deputy Assistant Attorney General for the Justice Department, ruled that the student, Christian Secor, should be released. The court ruled that Secor will be subject to GPS monitoring and must surrender access to firearms and his passport, among other conditions. Secor has pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Still, while Judge McFadden ruled that the government did not provide enough evidence to keep Secor locked up pending trial, he said that, "I understand why the government is concerned."
Federal prosecutors argued that Secor poses a danger to the community, and could attempt to flee.
In a search of his mother's home, where he was living, "law enforcement found three knives and a baton in the defendant's vehicle, mace and body armor plates in the defendant's bedroom, and a privately manufactured 'ghost gun' in a gun safe in the house," federal prosecutors said in a court filing. "Ghost gun" is a term for a firearm that is privately made - sometimes by hobbyists at home - and has no serial number, making it untraceable. California law requires that owners of such guns obtain a serial number for it from the state government, and restricts their sales. None of the charges against Secor relate to the gun.
