A member of my family was determined disabled in 1995, and receiving SSI and then also SSA as disabled adult child of an SSA recipient. Intellectual delay, epilepsy, other disabilities.
In January of this year, no usual benefits arrived in her direct deposit account.
No warning, no notice. Just no $ in the account.
This continued for Jan, Feb, March despite telephone contact twice to the local SS office. No benefits for three months!
The only explanation eventually given was that a notice had been mailed in December -- but mailed to a ten year old DEFUNCT post off box address. (Very suspicious, considering that other mail from the office was received regarding other matters.)
And now we know that Trump stooges in those agencies worked deliberately to deny benefits wherever they could get away with it. Messing with the lives and wellbeing of vulnerable people.

But done with such cruelty -- NO NOTICE! Just stopping deposits of lawful benefits.

(3,299 posts)...that handle disability or other personal claims adjudications. That was my experience. Most people in the agency just go along, because if they don't they are regarded as rate breakers and eventually get the ax one way or another. "You're spending too much money." "that kind of person is a parasite." It happens in the criminal justice system as well. At the state level the republicans whether in the govenor's office or legislature are always cutting administrative and judicial budgets to restrict the time and resources available to fairly adjudicate cases.

(3,334 posts)to her brain and hip bones. This cancer can not be cured or put into remission. She had chemo last week and her pain went through the roof. She has stopped chemo and is in Hospice starting today at home. She has 2-3 months to live. Yesterday she received a letter from SSI and was told she starts to receive SSI and Medicaid in 90-120 days. Thankfully, 3HC accepted her without charge.

(13,565 posts)Did she apply for SSI quite a long time ago?
Stingy Republicans -- so much heartbreak, so much trauma from their refusal to provide access to universal coverage and sustenance.

(3,334 posts)That was before her cancer was detected. She applied because she had blood in her stomach, liver disease, kidney disease, and back problems. They never turned her down, but they kept asking for more information. She was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer 5 weeks ago and Duke University Hospital sent their report to SSI. She had a phone interview with SSI 4 weeks ago. The letter came yesterday. It contained her health and financial information. It said if everything in their letter was correct then she would receive SSI and Medicaid in 90-120 days. I guess they figure they can save some money if they don't accept you until you are dead.
Getting the approval is a horrible process. Most are denied the first go-round. Even before Trump.
