(38,601 posts)I was a nay until I learned more. Effective against variants. One shot. Seems like a good one.

(2,081 posts)The guidance I saw is get whatever vaccine you can get. All of them available are 100% effective at preventing death and hospitalization. If that is offered to you, take out. If you have a choice offered to you, talk to your doctor to see which one is best for you based upon your medical history

(46,023 posts)A doctor friend looked up the studies. It was 100% effective at keeping you out of the hospital.

(11,613 posts)Some folks seem discouraged by the 66% number vs the mid nineties for the others in the tested efficacy. The important number, however, is that all 3 are almost 100% effective at avoiding hospitalization or death due to covid. I have just had my 2nd moderna but if all 3 were on a plate before me I'd take the J&J since its a single shot with no advertised side effects and seemingly just as effective at protecting you from serious illness.

If J&J had been available to me instead, I'd probably prefer that one-and-done option. Plus it's known to work against some of the variants.

So I cancelled the mass-vaccination appointment and made an appointment with the very close pharmacy instead. I was almost the only patron inside the pharmacy during my entire time there for the shot.

(44,972 posts)I probably could have looked around, but I didn't. I had only a minor side effect from a first Moderna-slightly sore arm, so I will have to wait to see what happens with the second shot.

(14,852 posts)... ANYWHERE (while cursing the idiocy of the search process not being centrally managed), so I was definitely thrilled to find an opening through my county's public health department!
I kind of dreaded needing to drive there (a busy area downtown) and being around hundreds of other people seeking a vaccination too, but I was more than willing to do it.
Then I did another quick search later that night and found openings at a pharmacy so close to me that I could easily walk there if needed! So I chose that option instead, cancelling the other appointment.

(44,972 posts)I had a good mask on (N95) and it went well.

(14,852 posts)They scheduled the 2nd dose automatically, of course. Same bat-time, same bat-place. (Lol.) Works for me!
I wore an N100 mask with a cloth mask covering the exhalation valve. I encountered so few people that it was probably overkill there, but whatever. I figured that I'd put so much effort into never getting infected that I didn't want to blow it now.

Hortensis
(58,785 posts)or dying are effectively nil. You're done. (No chance that delay in supply of your vaccine in your area, or other glitch, could delay scheduling and going for your second shot.)
Of course, if you have a phobia about the remaining minor chance of becoming sick enough to have to take to bed for a few days, you go for another that cuts those chances even more. But I don't and wouldn't.

(9,440 posts)My husband no reaction. I had what felt like the flu with chills, fever, headache, and muscle aches. I'm nearly back to normal now. I'm so glad I got the vaccination. And I'm so glad I don't have to go back for a second dose.

(63,221 posts)the J&J shot because I am impatient and would rather not have to wait it out for a second shot. I like the idea of one and done.
We'll see how it goes. Keep us posted.

(21,591 posts)To some of the components in other vaccines and does not have some of the concerns of the other ones. Plus, it was tested when the variants were circulating.
I took the first available and ended up with Pfizer but my daughter had J&J in another state and I was impressed when I researched it.
