Video: EXPLOITED ⚾️ Minor League Baseball Players Make Less Than Minimum Wage

Mar 25, 2021

Minor League Baseball players will earn as little as $5/hour this year—and will not be paid at all for work during spring training—due to exemptions that MLB has sought from basic laws that protect workers in every other industry in America.

Major League Baseball is exempt from antitrust laws that protect American workers from monopolies. Unlike their Major League counterparts, Minor League players do not have a union. As a result, MLB owners use their monopoly power to set the terms of Minor League contracts. This year, Minor League players will earn an annual salary of between $8,000 and $14,000, making them among the lowest paid workers in America.

But Minor Leaguers are fighting back.

well at least until the player has established some star value. The real yearly value of a college athletic scholarship is really more like $80,000+ per year (especially at prestigious private schools). A lot of the criticism of the NCAA is unfounded especially since EVERY athlete on every team-both male and female must be funded. This includes every player on the roster-from the multiple year benchwarmer to the 1-2% with real pro potential. A lot of people don't understand the monthly stipend alone (including room and board) is easily more than these players are reported to be getting-its calculated by the cost-of-living of the metropolitan area of the university. They have in fact been paid monthly compensation for close to a decade now in the form of the monthly stipend if you include the cost of living room and board. After their freshman year they can afford to live off campus in an apartment not just board in a university dorm on the school meal plan.

I wish the NCAA would simply allow any player to go pro any year he wants. Then in preseason he can judge his "market value" for professional athletics. Don't kid yourself these kids use the high platform of a major college program to enhance their value too. The platform of a major conference team is much greater than the minor leagues with TV, fan support, media attention etc. 99% of the hypocrisy is ended if they simply allow athletes to go pro whenever they want.
