(31,261 posts)Difficult is not impossible. They want us to conclude impossible and just throw up our fucking hands and give up.
We overcome their hurdles, register to vote, check our registration, vote and make sure that our vote get counted, vote them the fuck out of office.

(15,582 posts)The GA law signed today allows the legislature to overrule the election board, removes the sec of state from the board, and gives them total final authority over the outcomes of elections, regardless of what voters say.
So, other than killing the filibuster and passing HR/SB1, what do you suggest can actually be done to thwart the anti-democracy laws being passed at a rapid pace by state legislatures?

(31,261 posts)If they try to overrule their loses, they get taken to court, as agents of government and as persons. It will take a grossly unethical judge to uphold them, and my bet is that judge would get overturned.
The thing that killed gross segregation laws was Dr. King and others shedding light on how grossly unfair they were. Corporations that have major operations in Georgia wont stick around if republicans there blatantly start over-turning their election loses, you can count on that.
Again. People overcome their efforts to prevent them from voting, then vote them out of office. We cant do that throwing up our hands, or sitting at home instead of voting. The only way that they can truly stop a person from voting is to kill that person, if they do that, they face criminal charges.

(15,582 posts)Passing SB1 would make the GA laws moot- they would fight it in court, but from a weaker position.
Thousands of vaccinated activists dogging Joe Manchin all summer, along with direct pressure and threats of political consequences from Biden and Schumer, seems like a short term strategy worth pursuing, while Marc Elias fights in state court.

(31,261 posts)If 50% or less of the protesters vote, what do they accomplish but excite the opposite side?
Voting matters. Overcoming republican attempts to prevent voting yields tangible benefits, making a public dinner engagement uncomfortable for Joe Manchin does not.

(31,261 posts)People then were fighting for the fundamental right to vote. We have that today, even with attempts by republicans to make voting difficult. We also have tens and even hundreds of thousands of people who the right to vote was won for CHOOSING not to use that franchise, along with lots of young people choosing not to use it.
Voting brings about lasting change, while protests highlight a problem or a set of problems, if they are not followed by determined voting by the protesters and allied people, they dont accomplish much.

The only way that republicans wont try voter suppression is when they dont hold public office and have no influence on the people that do.

(1,896 posts)We have an advantage that Sinclair didn't. That advantage in in the size of the employee base of large businesses. Let's say that some of the workforce walks around in hats, and more than a few of them have lots to complain about. Personally, I would want to point out that ever since the election was stolen the boss doesn't care if any of you hats vote again. They never cared if I voted or not, so the only people that are losing are you guys again. Good luck.

(10,155 posts)For example, I propose a law requiring voters in predominantly white, Republican districts to name three Tyler Perry movies, or explain the differences between Mariachi, Norteño, and Banda ranchera music before they can enter polling places.

Georgia law already bans gifts to voters
Existing Georgia law bans giving gifts "for the purpose of registering as a voter, voting, or voting for a particular candidate." That provision doesnt mention food or water directly, but the Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger has interpreted it to include food or water.
In February, the Georgia elections board referred for investigation to prosecutors a couple of cases in which candidates gave food or water to voters.
Matthew Wilson bought four pizzas and passed out slices to those in line to vote in 2018, according to Reporter Newspapers. Wilson, a Democrat who won his race for state representative, said he distributed the pizza after getting permission from a poll manager. Kelly Rose, a Democrat who lost a state senate race, told PolitiFact that her team handed out water, oranges and chips at a 2020 polling site. "A woman passed out one day we were there," Rose told PolitiFact. Rose said she didnt campaign at the site and didnt break the law. (54,770 posts)We have 18 months to prepare for the next election. I think we are smart and organized enough to do what is needed to get even more people out to vote. And that's true whether or not the law gets overturned.
