The Masters played last year IN the pandemic. Theres no chance they alter anything this year.

Also, would CBS do the right thing and refuse to broadcast the event.
working at Augusta National is probably a prime job there. CBS paid a bit load of money for their tournament (its theirs not the PGA).

(13,538 posts)The Masters is THE tournament every year. People will do anything to get a ticket. I dont get it, but its the truth. The last time CBS was threatened with advertiser boycott, before women were members, Augusta National just paid for all the ad time and ran the tournament with NO advertising.

(75,606 posts)But, your point is well-taken.
The name comes from the fact that's it's an invitational for only those who have "mastered the game".
Only those who won in the last 2 years, or won a major in the last 5, past champions, and current winners of a few amateur championships are invited.
So, it's really about mastery of the game.
But, given it's in Georgia, it's an unfortunate title given the connotation.
intheflow
(29,940 posts)it's the same word. The Master of the Plantation was assumed to be someone who (or whose familial predecessors had) mastered the successful running of a plantation.
The way in which it differs is the plantation owners demanded to be called Master, as a title. Technically, Arnold Palmer and Tiger Woods could demand the same thing. English is a slippery language.
ProfessorGAC
(75,606 posts)Like I said, it's in Georgia.
If that annual event was in California or Massachusetts, we might not even make that connection.
But, history makes it unavoidable.

(4,477 posts)"Teacher" is the most common one, from which we get the "master's degree" and "craft master" (one deemed sufficiently skilled to teach others a specific trade). "Magistrate" also comes from it, which means not just "judge" but also "official with governing responsibilities", which morphed into "man in charge".

(7,654 posts)when collectively, people of color turn out in such massive numbers that they never win another election again. The rest is nice, but mostly performative.
All of these folks should instead direct their dollars towards paying for voter IDs, providing free babysitting during election periods, rides to the polls where legal, stations of water and food voters can pick up before they get into line, free phone charging before getting into line, and ten other creative things smarter people than I can come up with to make voting easier and long lines more bearable.

(4,585 posts)by firing 3 of the 5 election officials and hiring 3 of their toadies to alter the outcome. Also, they can delay certification of the vote which gives them time to meddle. This is a new law. They couldn't do it last time or they would have. I just mean we have to keep that in the forefront of our minds. We can't let that happen. We have to come out in droves again like we did last time, also. We can do it. We just have to lay the groundwork and be prepared. Starting now. If you don't think this is a super important part of their tactics, I'm sorry, but I've noticed it's not being mentioned much when the law is being referenced. It cannot be ignored. Have you read the new law?
qazplm135
(7,654 posts)You can't imply nothing matters cuz they will just steal the election then say we just have to come out in droves.
stopdiggin
(14,878 posts)also read your original post, which would suggest that there's no real point in voting (apparently even in superior numbers) -- because Republicans can just ignore the results. Declare whatever they wish. I do not think that is sound analysis (of the legislation) -- or good advice.

Coca cola may be one that could feel a boycott, the rest are not really consumer oriented businesses except Home Depot and Arby's. I'm sure nationwide if each outlet loses a dozen customers, they won't even notice.
If you need to get somewhere and Delta is the only option, well what are you going to do? Same with Cox Media, if they're the only cable source in your area, then you're going to have to cut the cord.
If boycotting a business satisfies your conscience, knowing that you won't support a company that goes against your beliefs, then I support that 100%. I do that now with Home Depot. But in the real world boycotts probably don't even make a blip on big corporations bottom line. It's mainly the public relations aspect.
However in looking for information on Georgia businesses, I did find this article, and it made me smile. So should I go back to Home Depot?

Read Charles Blows recent columns where he makes the case for minorities to move to the state. Migration into Georgia over the past twenty years has changed our politics.
Boycotts are effective when it hits the state in pocketbook. Policies can change.
Writing off a state that is trending more blue year-after-year is short-term thinking, though.

(3,328 posts)That state delivered EC vote to Biden, would not buckle under to pressure from Tru$$ia and give us a Senate majority. If there was a most value player in the last election cycle I would give it to John Lewis and Stacey Abrams. I know there will be knock down economic effects for the voting folks that saved our union from becoming a fascist state. Their rights to vote in the future is what we are protecting with this pressure.

I can picture this bill motivating those most affected to say oh H*LL no! and brave hell or high water to go out and vote. And I guarantee that there will be a massive swarm of people coming in from all over the US to hand out water, etc. There are sure to be a lot of high profile people (celebrities, athletes, etc) in that group making it a media spectacle, which WONT look good for the GOP.
