Striking Photos Will Change The Way You See The Average American
What does the average American look like? As time goes on, the answer to that question is becoming more and more complicated.
The country is living up to its melting pot reputation as American faces become less homogenous and more diverse, a phenomenon that renowned photographer and portrait artist Martin Schoeller captured for the October 125th anniversary issue of National Geographic magazine.

The 2000 U.S. Census presented the question of race differently, allowing respondents the option of selecting more than one racial category, with nearly 7 million Americans identifying as members of two or more races. The 2010 census included changes to more clearly distinguish Hispanic ethnicity as not being a race, with data revealing that whites would no longer be the majority in the country by 2043.
Schoellers photographs capture the changing face of America, a trend that is no doubt picking up speed with the increase of both interracial marriages and the births of biracial babies. The images also challenge traditional ideas of identity, providing evidence for the fluidity of racial and ethnic classification, which is explored more deeply in the magazine:

(83,654 posts)I welcomed a non white America as a majority. I was told that I was preaching white genocide. As if.
Fact is my second and third cousins are biracial, Japanese, White and Mexican.

(1,797 posts)I'm a 77 year old white man. I lived in Hawaii for 26 years. I never suffered at all being in the minority. The more diversity the better.

(94,350 posts)It will still be plurality White, and of color is not a binding principle of Blacks, Hispanics, Asians, Middle Easterners.../l
Fact. White will no longer be the majority. So the census tell us so.

(63,799 posts)is just beautiful, too bad that the white supremacists are too insecure with themselves and feel threatened how demographics are changing. SMH.

(16,085 posts)Are gonna have a more inclusive country. Im white, their grandfather is Hispanic . So my son is 1/2 Hispanic n their mother is Hispanic..they are beautiful n smart n so far innocent from the discrimination their grandfather n I experienced years ago. These people who are so afraid of being in the minority are worried theyre gonna be treated like crap because thats what they did.

(7,510 posts)Race and Hispanic Origin
White alone, percent 76.3%
Black or African American alone, percent(a) 13.4%
American Indian and Alaska Native alone, percent(a) 1.3%
Asian alone, percent(a) 5.9%
Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander alone, percent(a) 0.2%
Two or More Races, percent 2.8%
Hispanic or Latino, percent(b) 18.5%
White alone, not Hispanic or Latino, percent 60.1%

Asian and Hispanic are the fastest growing groups, due to immigration. Black or African American alone won't change much. White alone, not Hispanic or Latino will decline, but many Hispanics are white.

(2,636 posts)Had the GOP not deliberately targeted groups for cruel treatment they would not be so worried about when others are in charge.
THere's a lot to that treat others the way you want to be treated maxim.

(3,334 posts)so my husband considers himself White and I consider myself a POC even though the census says I am White. Our children consider themselves biracial. We want MENA added to the census.

(24,523 posts)Designing that part of the census is complicated, I think the important thing is how you self-identify.

(15,693 posts)Special admissions to college, job preferences, you name it. They will suddenly expect minority status. I see it big time.

(31,261 posts)Hispanic Whites take it up to around 70%, but many of them observe Hispanic culture. But the non-White population, except for African Americans is growing faster than the White population, especially Hispanics from Mexico, Central and South America.
As an African American, I realistically expect a good part of my race to be absorbed by Whites and Hispanics by 2043, that genetic mixing seems to be happening at a faster clip down where I live in the South.

(11,559 posts)Even that is too far out. SO much can happen even before 2028, let alone 2043.
sheshe2
(83,654 posts)You are correct, it is happening more quickly. No wonder they are so frightened and fragile. I am white and I applaud it.
One fact is already clear: As the nation becomes even more racially diverse from the bottom up of the age structure, more attention needs to be given to the needs and opportunities for Americas highly diverse younger generations. The demography alone dictates that this will be necessary to ensure success for these youth and the nation as a whole.

No wonder why trump wanted to hault the census. Hm.
