And that means they've declared "war" on the United States.
That picture on the wall behind the Georgia governor signing that nightmare piece of legislation was a painting of an old southern plantation. Is the plan to reopen it? If so, Georgia is on a path that goes far beyond Jim Crow 2.0.
We can hope this "war" doesn't heat up. But we cannot let the actions of Georgia's Republican Party stand. It goes without saying that other states will follow Georgia's lead. If a new federal voting rights law isn't passed, Republicans will be in a position to, in effect, "appoint" senators and house members which will give them control of congress in 2022 and the presidency in 2024. Put as plainly as possible, it will be the end of democracy in America.
So what do we do about it? Get rid of the filibuster? How do we get around Senator Manchin and perhaps Senator Sinema?
We are in a dangerous moment in which our freedoms are under attack by a minority of Americans who don't believe in democracy. The Democratic Party must act while we still have the congress and the presidency. So what's to be done? I wish I knew. I sure as hell hope that Joe Biden, Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi have an answer.

(58,785 posts)they do know. None of this is new to them. The writing's been on the wall for some time. It's just moving fast now is all.
On the plus side, the professionals are no longer almost the only ones who do know. That's a huge advance over just 5 years ago, when most of the electorate were lead to believe the election was mostly about healthcare. Not whether to remain a democracy or become a police state.
