(90,556 posts)My brother that died last year was a mechanic all his life, and a good one. During high school in the 1960s he learned to fix cars. Out of high school, he got a 2-year electronics certificate from the local community college, but iirc didn't really use it for some decades. He maintained mechanical gear at a resort, at a fish plant, and so on. He always kept his hand in with cars, though, and for quite awhile was the go-to guy for VW repairs in his area in his spare time, right up until VW opened a dealership.
At one point he was out of a job and applied at a garage, and the owner took one look at his by-then grizzled appearance and told him that there were no cars he could work on because they were all full of electronics now. He hustled home and dug around in his shoebox filing system until he found his old certificate and got the job.
