Florida's DeSantis threatens lawsuit if CDC doesn't enable U.S. cruises to resume by summer

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) is threatening to sue the federal government if the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) doesn't allow cruises to restart by the summer.

Why it matters: Florida is at the heart of the U.S. cruise industry, with Miami, Port Everglades and Port Canaveral among the busiest ports in the world. Millions of passengers pass through in a typical year. It's worth billions of dollars for the state's economy, per AP.

Driving the news: DeSantis appeared alongside Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody (R) and the leaders of Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Disney and Norwegian cruise lines a Port Canaveral news conference Friday to make the case for lifting the no-sail order.

"They did the No-Sail Order in March of 2020 ... and it's never been really to the point where they're making an effort to really get it back," DeSantis said.

They set parameters for safety.

How many COVID laden ships will you allow to dock at Port Canaveral, Port Everglades, and Miami? Or will you just leave a Cruise ship with a COVID infected passenger out at sea and sacrifice the rest of the passengers and crew as it rips through the ship? Which also happened last spring.

How many COVID infected ships will it take to bring the industry down?

Money over people.

else, and then if heaven forbid, something happens and an outbreak occurs, guess what happens? The same thing will happen when trump literally refused to the let the passengers off (Americans no less too!). Biden won't do this (force the passengers to stay on the ships), but Biden is also, in far more concrete ways, fighting Covid 19 whereas in FL, Covid is spiking yet again!

interested in going on a cruise right now. And the ships will be losing money if they aren't full to the brim

to keep the pandemic going and see if we can't spawn an even more infectious and deadly variant. Not only should cruise ships stay offline, we should stop flights in/out of FL and seal the borders. Oh, and cut off their tequila and rum supply....just because.

eventually up to the US Supreme Court. Why? By the time it even gets to the SC, the economy may (we hope) be in full swing anyway, indicating once again he's wasted state monies.

Presuming we get around 75% of adults vaccinated, and there isn't any vaccine- resistant strains, I would expect loosening restrictions.

Also, are the cruise lines that busy in summer? I would have thought that they would do the most business in winter.

prices go down when kids go back to school. A family of 4-5 might be packed into one cabin. A large ship might usually cruise with 3800 passengers but in the summer might punch it up to 4500 with 700 extra kids running around-that's why I cruise in late August-early September
