My first shot is this Wednesday, and I was planning on cleaning my bathroom after. Should I do anything strenuous after getting my shot?

(6,278 posts)My wife had hers Friday (Moderna) and is sleepy. Our daughter in law had hers the week before and it really hit her hard for a few days. So you might feel up to it, but don't count on it?

(115,674 posts)It wont ache as much if you keep moving it after you get vaccinated.

(3,370 posts)First, I believe one should move the arm that receives the injection as much as possible. My only reaction to the first shot was soreness at the injection site. It was just a very mild soreness that didn't interfere with anything at all. I lifted weights that day. I cleaned. I cooked dinner and did all of my usual activities without issue.
It truly varies from Individual to individual.

(3,148 posts)I agree with the other poster. Everyone seems to handle it differently. Haven't heard of many people being fatigued after the first. Most report mild symptoms after getting their second shot. So I return to the flu shot and my original question. As it may be your best indicator of how you'll handle this shot.

(11,949 posts)Sweetie, I feel bad from the shot and could not clean the bathroom! I can hear me now!
But Ms Gulfcoast66, after being with me for 33 years, would not be buying what I was selling!
In the real world I had no side effects. Not even a sore arm. Nor did the wife. I actually mowed the yard that day.

(11,451 posts)To start, plus they say to keep moving arm to keep blood flow going so even after it was sore I moved it around.
So unless you plan to be hard scrubbing years of worn in grime your ok 😜

(6,622 posts)I went home and shoveled snow after mine. My choice would have been to work out, but that wouldnt have gotten the snow cleared. It makes a big difference to me to work the arm after a vaccination.

(23,973 posts)...you do have a few side effects. Do whatever you feel good enough to do.
And the above advice about moving your arm is exactly right. It helps the absorption of the vaccine material. I tell all my teenage patients, "Move it, move it, move it! No pity parties!

(15,769 posts)You will sleep for 8 hours like I did. About an hour after the shot, I was watching tv and woke up 8 hours later. I had Pfizer today. First shot.

do it tomorrow or plan on waiting.

(44,973 posts)I had a very minor sore arm after the first shot. But different people react differently. Some people have reported being tired and so on.

(3,813 posts)Later that day and the next day my arm was extremely sore. Like almost too painful to lift. On the third day it was absolutely fine. No other symptoms except a little fatigue. If you plan to do anything strenuous I would recommend doing it immediately after and then taking it easy.

(28,858 posts)Sore arm that started hurting a few hours after getting the vaccine,
which was very sore the next day, and better after that.
I didn't do much of anything. They didn't tell me about moving my
arm, but I'll be ready after the next shot in two weeks.

(16,377 posts)However, for the second shot, I wouldn't plan on anything for the first couple of days following the booster, just in case.

(9,443 posts)you could have cleaned your bathroom and had it done before you get your shot. Actually I had the J&J and started to feel unwell that evening after having come home and doing some housework. The rest of the night and into the early morning I felt like I had the flu with a slight headache, chills, fever, and just an all over icky feeling. But my arm never got sore. Since then I've known 5 other people who got the J&J and none of them had a reaction like I did. A couple had a little bit of a sore arm, that was it. I suspect I would have felt sick regardless of which vaccine I had gotten. I think it's just the way my body reacts. Just play it by ear and do what you feel up to.

(102,225 posts)full shift providing health care to others after both doses. Slight pain at the site of injection, but it was truly minimal FOR ME. Ditto for several dozen I've vaccinated based on their summary of their first dose.
Clean the bathroom ahead of time.

Seriously, this info will help speed the final (non-emergency-based) approval process for vaccines, which takes away yet another argument for those who should get it, but aren't (e.g., 30% of the US military).

(13,491 posts)If you start feeling illi effects, it's hours afterwards. (Unless you're one of the few who has an allergic reaction.)
FWIW: I had a sore arm and was tired the day after.

(4,372 posts)A month or so after taking them my back would go out. Just
like in 17' when the flu was raging across the country...like
a lot of people had muscle soreness. I've immunity problems
and I'm really hesitant about doing the vaccinations...

(32,633 posts)Any reaction you might have - possible sore arm or tiredness - will only last about 24 hours.
It sure beats dying from Covid, right?

(15,278 posts)my first shot, but it had no impact on using that arm at all. Most of the soreness was gone in less than 24 hrs. Didn't even need ibuprofin.

that's just an aside, and has nothing to do with...
"Should I do anything strenuous."
Because I can't imagine that cleaning a bathroom could be strenuous.

(3,623 posts)She experienced no side effects and I had a slight headache for a bit. Truthfully though, had I been asked to clean the bathroom, I would have definitely used the headache as an excuse. So, consider it a get out of jail free card.
