WASHINGTON — New research published earlier this month in the American Journal of Public Health argues that Florida is undercounting the number of people who died from COVID-19 by thousands of cases, casting new doubt on claims that Gov. Ron DeSantis navigated the coronavirus pandemic successfully.

Conservatives have celebrated DeSantis for his handling of the pandemic, which has killed more than 30,000 residents of the state. Critics of the combative governor, meanwhile, say that many of those deaths would have been prevented if he had listened more diligently to health experts. DeSantis resisted lockdowns, downplayed masks and has made it increasingly difficult for localities to institute public health measures of their own.

And the state could be on the cusp of a new coronavirus surge.

The impact of the pandemic in Florida “is significantly greater than the official COVID-19 data suggest,” the researchers wrote. They came to that conclusion by comparing the number of estimated deaths for a six-month period in 2020, from March to September, to the actual number of deaths that occurred, a figure known as “excess deaths” because they exceed the estimate.

There were 400,000 excess deaths across the United States in 2020, a spike closely correlated to the coronavirus pandemic.

The lack of testing early in the pandemic may also have undercounted COVID-19 deaths, explains Daniel Weinberger, an epidemiologist at the Yale School of Public Health who has also studied the coronavirus and excess deaths.

Was it when he had stormtroopers assault the home and arrest the women who was compiling and publishing the real numbers?

I had a "discussion" with a covidiot who thinks only 60,000 people died from covid. Just like the regular flu.

We knew at the beginning of the pandemic he was harassing anyone reporting the truth. And the media just shrugs it off. Like “oh well. Biden tripped on a stair. let’s cover that instead!!!l”

once again, the have successfully diverted the public's attention away from what they were doing, while all the time accusing Cuomo of the same kind of thing, but on a much smaller scale.

They are constantly criticizing the other side of doing something, (often made up), to get the public focused on that, when in fact they are extremely guilty of the same.......

Three keys to the RepubliCONs:

1) Republicans lie

2) Republicans are extremely hypocritical....

3) Republicans statement's are mostly 180 degrees from the facts or reality.

large migrant field worker population in Immoklee. She has been telling me this for a year. That and the red tide and toxic blue and green algae blooms. Note: If the signs on the beach say "Don't let your dog swim" humans probably shouldn't either, no matter how drunk you get on Spring Break. DeathSantis has also been making sure that vaccines go to wealthy supporters, they don't mind taking from migrant communities to do it either. That has got some reporting down there. But yeah, not near as important as tripping on stairs.

10. Does the governor have qualified immunity? Is there some law against cooking the books

when it comes to simply counting? There really might be no laws against this. But I don't know, not being a FL lawyer.

Because if there aren't any laws against inaccurate counting, the same issue could already exist for the U.S. Census across the country.

THAT would call for a national law that expicitly stipulates only a certain margin of counting error. That a new law should stipulate a clear margin of error would be important if Biden calls for an audit of the old count, or for an entirely new national count. And a new state would add even greater weight to a decision to rerun the Census.

Such a law for the Census should also apply to all state counts in national health emergencies like pandemics.

I'm asking because I wonder about how law ACTUALLY supports of any state, but especially red states -- not whether we WANT laws to support them. But if such laws actually exist. I bet not.

as Dear Leader followed President Xi's lead instead of the CDC or NIH by denying the danger and covering up the real death toll. Of course his radicalized base translated that into "let's go beat up geriatric Asians!! YAAAAHOOO!" Where is the common sense or reason in the mask opposition??? A global pandemic was a matter of time since 1918, basic scientific fact. Covid is a novel respiratory virus, a mask is the most basic of respiratory droplet precaution, this is not new either. Pardon me for saying so, but when your base has a strong Christo/fascist element, "belief" will override fact no matter how set in stone the fact is. It isn't so much that they are stupid, it is that their ignorance is selective based on "belief." There is no reasoning with that. We have only to look at Myanmar today to see what we truly faced January 6, in spite of all the hugging, kissing, prayer circles, and family picnics. DeathSantis may be Dear Leader's sock puppet, he may be that stupid, but I am more willing to bet the ignorance was selective based on the attraction of tourist dollars and shear demagoguery. That simple.

His wife does all the booking and makes sure the crew has everything they need at the tracks. They both now have COVID along with over half the team. He said every team he contacted are experiencing the same thing. Even following the COVID protocol of not allowing fans in the pits, no camping at the track by fans etc. and no teams allowed to go out in the town while there, because people from the area work at the track, half the teams have COVID. DeSantis is not just putting people in Florida at risk.
