Im starting to wonder if Chauvins attorney is purposely acting incompetent so that Chauvin can claim this later depending on the outcome

(32,858 posts)Before he stopped kneeling on Floyds neck. The medics had to push the officer off of Mr Floyd to put him on the gurney.

..."Floyd and Chauvin were colleagues at one stage, with the former working as a bouncer and the latter working as off-duty security guard outside the venue."

(115,691 posts)Anyhow, an appeal based on ineffective assistance of counsel almost never works - the lawyer has to be blatantly and spectacularly ineffective, as in drunk, asleep or insane. This guy isn't any of those things; he just has a shitty case.

(34,069 posts)But that was a big blunder to ask the 17-year old about whether her life had changed since the incident.
They gained nothing by asking it (and I can't imagine what they thought they might gain), and it was a perfect set-up for the prosecution to ask about how the life of a young black woman (with many black male relatives) had change since the incident.

But you might be right.

(62,270 posts)"Feared for his life, didn't know he was pressing down too hard, there were other officers there and Chauvin is the fall guy," etc.
Honestly the other officers *should* have been charged too, but Chauvin's actions are most documented, and therefore more prosecutable.
He's almost certainly going down for manslaughter. Not sure about 2nd Degree.
There's just not much the defense can do in such an overwhelmingly evidenced situation.

(62,270 posts)That's really good to hear. I thought they threw the charges out on them. May be thinking of another cop related trial?
sarisataka
(18,651 posts)but the judge granted the motion to hold Chauvin's trial separately.
You may be thinking of the back and forth about the 3rd degree murder charge. The other three are facing charges as accomplices

(5,557 posts)they're going to keep going back to the toxicology as much as possible, and at least one on the jury to buy into it.

(18,651 posts)he appears quite competent. He simply has a big hill to climb and also it will not help him to be super aggressive with the eye witnesses.
His push will be in the coming weeks when each side calls their expert witnesses. That is the best opportunity to create reasonable doubt.

(13,783 posts).... end up with such a high profile case. On the other hand, I can't think what a good attorney would have done differently except, maybe, not even try some of those avenues.

(115,691 posts)to pretty up this pig of a case. There's only so much he or any lawyer can do when there's that damning video.

(62,270 posts)It is impossible for anyone with empathy to look at that video and see it any other way.

(115,691 posts)His job is damage control - get his client acquitted of the worst charges, convicted of the least serious one.
