(26,024 posts)Maybe he just needed to be introduced to his new surroundings a little more slowly.

(10,749 posts)Maybe Major should return to Delaware. The Bidens should find another rescue pup to keep him company. This sucks, but so does biting. This would be the responsible move, as difficult as it might be. This assumes, of course, that there are people living at the Biden residence in Delaware.

(113,201 posts)German Shepherds are great, intelligent dogs, but they are instinctively protective and territorial--even with the best training. They consider those that they "know" to be their protectees, but the complications come when there are a lot of new people all the time. Otherwise, strangers are those to be wary of, which is what is expected of them in a lot of settings.
I hope they can work this out and given his advanced age, I sure hope that Champ can continue to stay with the Bidens at the WH.

(13,746 posts)have instincts, were they QOP's???
The dog probably wants a quieter environment, there are many people employed at the WH.

(997 posts)Doesn't seem like a good place for him. Unless he was regularly biting people before coming to the White House his behavior has clearly been impacted by the move.

(15,613 posts)It looks like he shouldn't be around people at all unless he's properly restrained so he can't bite anyone. A big strong dog like that could maim or kill someone.

(47,365 posts)Neither of the Bidens were there during the second biting incident, as far as I can tell.

(7,046 posts)so soon, anyway.
Major was a shelter dog, and no one knows what from his background may trigger him. The WH is a very active place, and as was mentioned before, German Shepherds are territorial and protective of their people. With new people coming around all the time, he doesn't have the temperament (nor probably enough training) to cope. Better to get him to a calmer environment and get him a lot of training.....

(47,365 posts)So not much of a shelter background.

(15,511 posts)The HR rep for my former employer brought her HUGE German Shepherd and her small child, a young boy, to work with her one time.
The dog was fine with me until I hurriedly walked into the office to get my boss later. That's when the boy was startled by my quick entrance. And that's when the dog sensed the boy's fear and acted like it was going to try to rip me to pieces. The HR woman grabbed it by the back of its collar when the dog was just a few feet away from me.

(17,191 posts)I wouldnt put it past someone to have an agenda that would cause stress to the Bidens.
Sorry, but Im almost always on the dogs side in instances like this.
LisaL
(47,365 posts)and you blame the victim? Lots of people work in the White House, it's not fair to them that they have to be afraid of the dog.

(6,477 posts)Seriously. I know a lot of y'all love dogs, and they can do no wrong, etc.
Please understand that some of us don't like dogs and don't feel safe around dogs. A dog that actually has two biting incidents needs to be removed from the public place.
