Casualty of Covid? Apparently you can't rent cars now (for less than $200 per day)

... and that's if you can find them.

I have to take my car to the shop this week and the dealer has/had an Enterprise desk in the building. So I go online and look for a 2 day rental. None available. So I expand criteria to the airport, an international airport where I've never had any trouble finding a car. All they have are a couple of sub compacts for 200 a day plus fees. 3 days was going to run nearly $800.

So I start looking and apparently the rental agencies sold what cars they could early in 2020 because they needed to offload vehicles and get some fast cash. Next, the few they have are being taken as people don't want to fly as much. This I understand. But I also read that they are having a tough time restocking because of the financial hit they took as well as the fact that car companies don't want to sell fleets of vehicles due to metal shortages or something. I know everything manufacturing has slowed down. It took me 4 months to replace an outboard motor on a boat this Summer/Fall.

Has anyone else tried to rent a car only to find them gone or insanely expensive? Well, now you know. And please don't plan on just popping in to an airport and picking one up for at least $200+ a day IF you can find one.

Got a rental from enterprise for less than $40/day, unlimited mileage. No problems, no issues at all.

I just searched for a rental near Dallas and found lots at good prices. Decided to Uber instead, though, because I’m not going far and I’m vaccinated.

I can loan out for...I dunno...$175/day? Clean, tires almost good enough to pass inspection! Pulls to the right a little.
