The supposed DOJ official extorting Matt Gaetz was David McGee, a career guy in DOJ who served as a 1st AUSA. Not someone in a position to extort. He says, "This is a blatant attempt to distract from the fact that Gaetz is apparently about to indicted for sex trafficking girls."

According to this, McGee got his law degree in 1976 and worked at the DOJ until 1996, but has been with the private law firm Beggs & Lane since then.

The point being that the chances of his using information from the DOJ 25 years later for extortion seem slim. The investigation into Gaetz is entirely separate from McGee, and bringing McGee up is just an attempt at a distraction.
