This time last year I was watching Gov Cuomo trying to inform New Yorkers about the pandemic, while incidentally engaging the whole nation with his emotional capacity, genuine ethnic folksiness, intelligence, and heart. He talked about his family in very relatable ways.
This time last year I was tuning in to my own Governor Newsoms broadcasts as he tried to keep us abreast of Californias efforts to deal with the catastrophe. Hes really bright, and I like that, and hes a Democrat so we know where he stands on the important issues, but hes a technocrat, so while not cold, he lacks the folksiness of the guy from New York.
Over time, hubs and I started assessing the two men as presidential candidates, post-pandemic. I bet a lot of other people were doing the same.
What do you think their prospects are now?
Second question on edit:
Do you think there's a co-ordinated take-down campaign against Democrats?
In my OP I didnt specify that for hubs and me, neither was our #1 choice we were just thinking popular opinion across the country. Trump was giving us nothing but lies and snake-oil at the time, if you recall. These two Democratic governors were in the forefront with truth.

(15,080 posts)More than Cuomo. Cuomo's toast IMHO.
But there are a lot more capable Dems out there whom I would choose over either one of them.

(9,067 posts)I don't think the recall that will never happen with Newsom makes or breaks his prospects. He's just so . . . West Coast. It's hard to articulate. Kamala Harris doesn't have that same aura about her.
He plays well here in California, but I just don't see him gaining national traction.
I don't think the recall affects him either way. It's just one of those things that isn't going to happen. He's not well-liked here, but I don't see people scrambling to be rid of him. I do think non-Californians underestimate how much his French Laundry stunt cost him in terms of good will. Most of my Democratic friends can't wait til he's gone. They just don't want to bother about a recall.

(36,017 posts)If Newsom beats the recall, and even half way solves his state's fire and water problems, his chances could improve over time, but not in time for 2024. At that point, if Joe doesn't run, Harris would likely choose a battleground state running mate -- GA or TX, maybe?
My hubs and I were doing the same as you and yours last year. Until Cuomo outright said he'd never run. Which is just fine. I'm also fine with his just doing his job right now.
Yes, I think evidence will emerge, not from investigators, but likely through journalists, that there is a coordinated take-down campaign against Democrats.
It's what Republican dark money does.
Thank you for asking.
