(82,849 posts)I think it was when I first saw 2001: A Space Odyssey that I realized I had this deep-seated terror of being untethered in space like that.

(19,577 posts)Colonel Ed McCauley goes out to do an extra-vehicular repair, and is knocked into space. He repeats his name every 30 seconds so worldwide tracking stations can monitor him as he drifts further and further from the ship. I can vividly remember watching this episode on TV. It still holds up, and the series was quite accurate to the state of space exploration at the time.

Kick in to the DU tip jar?
This week we're running a special pop-up mini fund drive. From Monday through Friday we're going ad-free for all registered members, and we're asking you to kick in to the DU tip jar to support the site and keep us financially healthy.
As a bonus, making a contribution will allow you to leave kudos for another DU member, and at the end of the week we'll recognize the DUers who you think make this community great.
