I think it was when I first saw 2001: A Space Odyssey that I realized I had this deep-seated terror of being untethered in space like that.

Colonel Ed McCauley goes out to do an extra-vehicular repair, and is knocked into space. He repeats his name every 30 seconds so worldwide tracking stations can monitor him as he drifts further and further from the ship. I can vividly remember watching this episode on TV. It still holds up, and the series was quite accurate to the state of space exploration at the time.

(approximate speed of the International Space Station, but close enough)

I would guess that if he got in trouble, the shuttle could maneuver and go fetch him.
