The GOP was convinced that Trump would be re-elected, one way or another.
And as a result thereof, Barrs DOJ would be free to pursue or quash any investigations currently underway including the activities of Matt Gaetz.
In other words, such Barr-sanctioned investigations would be gathering kompramat on high-profile Republicans that could be used to ensure their loyalty to Trump in future, no matter how out-of-control his actions might be during his expected second term.
I can only wonder how many other Republicans Barrs DOJ were investigating in the belief that the details of such investigations would never surface publicly, but would serve as a compelling incentive to toe-the-party-line for many GOPers, under the threat of having such details revealed if they refused to go-along-to-get-along.
After four years of Trump, I have learned to be extremely suspicious and with good reason. And I have a feeling that Bidens win has thrown the proverbial monkey-wrench into what the powers-that-be in the GOP were convinced would never go beyond the internal workings of the Trump partys machinations.
I believe that Gaetz is just the first of many high-profile Republicans who will be outted as a result of the kompramat their own party put together to ensure their loyalty to the Former Guy never realizing that there might be a new sheriff in town who would uncover the details of the offences the GOP were convinced would never see the light of day thanks to Trumps expected second term in office.
Gaetz is just the proverbial tip of the iceberg. And every high-profile Republican currently in office is shitting themselves at the thought that the kompramat their own party has on them will now be used against them by the new political regime.
There are a million stories to be told and Matt Gaetzs story is just one of them. Others are bound to follow and some of them will make Gaetzs tale of woe seem trivial by comparison.

(2,151 posts)When Gaetz went to WY to work against Liz Cheney's campaign, her Dad got so pissed that he called Barr have the DOJ investigate Gaetz, in order to derail his career. Nothing as complicated as blackmail, just directly sabotage the bleeper.
Although blackmail could also be part of the picture - these aren't mutually exclusive theories. Now that I think about it, I actually hope you're right, Nance, because there would be many more stories like this coming to light under AG Garland.

(3,457 posts)That would be so great if the GOP could have a cleansing, which I find very hard for it to happen anyway, even if a bunch of them are kicked out of office.
Throughout the history of the GOP they have always been trash and yes, there are exceptions, but very few. The mentality of people who belong to the republican party is something that is taught through generations, and it is very difficult to clean, these people are indoctrinated, they belong to a cult.

(44,121 posts)I uncovered a YouTube video yesterday on Stalin's spies. In the early part of the Cold War, the video said he stripped Soviet passports from citizens abroad, returned them to Moscow, and put his own new people with photos in the passports. So these were now actual spies with the ID's of ordinary citizens.
I wonder why the fake IDs? Sounds like a stalk, surveillance, perhaps even kompromat or blackmail operation nipped in the bud.

(2,713 posts)He was literally stammering, incredulous when Fox News revealed to him that Romney was getting his ass kicked. He really could not believe it -- and I thought then and still do that it was because he and his venomous POSs cronies had thought theyd rigged the election (just as they did to give Bush a victory over Kerry in 04). But something went wrong, Romney went back to Utah, and Obama led the nation for another 4 years.
Same thing, I believe, happened here. The Party of Traitors' attempts to rig the election was overcome by events. Changes to mail-in voting and other laws that made it, if not easier, then at least possible for people to vote, and the result screwed up Trumps plan to steal the election.
Meanwhile, Barr, could well have assumed hed be the new Hoover in the lifetime Trump administration, protected from harm by his carefully kept files from secret investigations.
It makes sense and would (will?) make a helluva movie! Course the movie will have to wait until at least one other traitors foul, perverted deeds are publicly exposed. Please let it be Lindsey!

Man, are things starting to make sense.
It's REALLY been emphasized that this investigation was during the trump administration when Barr was A.G. As I've also speculated, a lot of dirt was being dug up and held against a lot of these Republicans to use against them and keep them in line no matter what the former guy did while in office and assuming he'd win re-election by using every trick in the book. Unfortunately, for them, they still lost. Maybe they underestimated the Judiciaries commitment to the rule of law..
I'm REALLY, REALLY, REALLY, REALLY, REALLY looking forward to hearing about what they have on Lindsey Graham.
