Rep. Clyburn told HuffPost:
Since when do their rights take precedence over your fellow Democrat Warnock, who saw his state just pass laws to keep him from getting reelected? he asked. And youre going to say its more important for you to protect 50 Republicans in the Senate than for you to protect your fellow Democrats seat in Georgia. Thats a bunch of crap.
.snip...
Im insulted when he tells me that its more important to maintain a relationship with the minority in the U.S. Senate than it is for you to maintain a relationship with the minority of voters in America, Clyburn said in an interview. Thats insulting to me.
Rep. Clyburn is correct. Manchin is choosing to oppose voting rights and democracy for all in the name of a fantasy realm of bipartisanship in the Senate that hasnt existed for generations. One suspects that Joe Manchins position has less to do with bipartisanship and is more related to him maintaining his seat in increasingly dark red West Virginia.
Jim Clyburn is bluntly putting the choice out there.
Republicans are never going to vote for protecting and expanding voting rights. The partys stated mission is to make it more difficult for non-Republicans to vote. Manchin is choosing to side with Republicans and Democrats need more people like Rep. Clyburn to turn up the heat on him by telling it like it is.

Joe is saving nothing. This is how we got into trouble in the first place.
Give people a real difference and make a real difference. That is how you win.

(356 posts)The Blanche Lincolns, Joe Liebermans, Harold Ford Jrs., Heath Shulers and the rest of them nearly ruined Obama's presidency. They weakened the ACA down significantly; it was still a Big F'ing Deal (as Joe Biden said), but it could have been a much, much bigger F'ing deal.
Quite frankly it was the Liebercrats that inadvertently helped create the conditions for the ascendancy of Trump. Good on Clyburn for calling Manchin on this nonsense.

(17,189 posts)I wonder how Sen. Joe Manchin would weaken our ACA even further.
I feel depressed when i think about what Manchin is doing. Why is he helping the GOP so often?

(4,232 posts)This is just another example of a daily 2-minute hate. Personally, I say crack on, but thats because Manchin deserves pressure. I dont bow down because hes the best we can get. If voting rights are so damn important, put your cards on the fucking table. Cheers, Representative Clyburn.

(3,374 posts)that the bills Democrats are trying to pass will benefit them, otherwise he is not doing his job, he is just trying to preserve his sit, and in my view, the way he usually votes and acts there is very little difference between him and a republican.
His job is to teach people why the bills are good for them, why they need to support Democratic ideals, why they need to turn away the republican actions and how these act against them. It seems to me he is allowing people to dictate what he does and not the other way around.
It sickens me every time he talks about "his republican friends", always catering to them when he knows very well that, at the end of the day, "his republican friends" don't give a damn about him.

Unfortunately he chooses to try to convince the people of WV to oppose democratic ideals when they support them, and cater to them when they already to.

(9,171 posts)appropriate pressure. I would never expect Representative Clyburn to go easy on voting rights.
But put your cards on the table, and give Mitch a heads up? Contraindicated.

(6,795 posts)Media gave Trump a pass on the inevitable weakness of that stupid promise. Media is pushing for Biden to promise new jobs for those affected by dirty energy downsizing.
Manchin should be fighting back at that hypocrisy, telling his constituents the truth. Coal is as dead as the horse and buggy, as dead as the ancient life forms from which it developed. He should be working to secure West Virginian renewable energy development, displaced worker re-education and training. He should demonstrate how he and Democrats can improve the lot of Appalachia by embracing the inevitable changes coming their way.
Instead, he's stuck in FEAR MODE, the self renewing, self perpetuating rigor mortis that meets ANY progressive action in that region. He could be free of the political extortion which strangles him if he would only break free.
But really after all is said and done, the solution could well be that those people just need to move out and let someone else take over their land. I hear the Cherokee Nation might be interested.

Senate rules I believe is where it will go, and from what Ive read the filibuster is essentially unconstitutional. Im trusting our dem leaders.

(3,433 posts)I respect that Clyburn is both speaking out for his constituents and speaking from his heart.
But he framed it in 2 ways that won't help him in his mission.
1) The voting rights of all Americans are threatened by attacks on democracy.
2) HR1 is designed to protect 250 years of American democracy from being destroyed and being rigged by a few billionaires. It's an aanti-oligarchy bill.
3) If you want to pressure Manchin and the other GOPers, you don't frame this as a party-loyalty issue. It needs to be an "All American" issue. GOP voters need to be pissed that their senators aren't supporting it.
4) For the same reason, it also doesn't help to frame this as a minority-rights issue. While it might be exact that, this approach makes it seem like it's "special rights". That won't Manchin voters in West Virginia or the 10 GOP senators that Manchin is trying to work with.
6) Red meat to the base Dem voters won't move the needle on this for Dems. It might make it even worse.

(6,144 posts)Doesn't he realize that West Virginia will probably pass a similar law, and that could result in his defeat in his next election? I'm sure he realizes that Republicans control both houses of the West Virginia legislature, and the Governor's Office. He's already in a very tenuous position since he won in 2018 with less than 50% of the vote, and Trump took the state big time in 2020.
So, I can't understand his reluctance to support this bill.
And even worse, defeat of this bill will allow all those Jim Crow laws to stand, and that will guarantee that the Republicans will take back both houses of the Congress in 2022. Any Democratic initiated legislation fro that point forward will be stillborn.
The Republicans have no intention of working with Democrats on anything...ever! That should be clear. Working with them is a worthless waste of time.
Manchin needs to listen to Clyburn and stand tall for the passage of this bill.
BobTheSubgenius
(11,558 posts)...but I'm also quite conflicted by the "80% support is better than 0" position. It's quite a conundrum, and one I'm inclined towards the latter. If the Democrats had a majority in the Senate, this wouldn't be much of a decision.

1 Republicans in WV are bringing in Voter Suppression laws to reduce Manchin Voters
2 HR1/HR4/S1, protects Manchin from those Voter Suppression laws.
