Chauvin trial: King and Lane were allowed at the scene the night of the incident

This seems to me wholly unacceptable. Sergeant Edwards, Minneapolis Police Department, is testifying that he was sent to secure the scene the night of the incident and that when he arrived King and Lane were there alone.

Is there no protocol that would indicate that officers involved in an incident would not be at the crime scene they themselves were involved in?
