The final insult: Some dying of COVID while awaiting vaccine
By JAY REEVES
April 3, 2021

After months of hoping to receive a COVID-19 immunization and then weeks of fighting the illness after one never came, Air Force veteran Diane Drewes was down to her last few breaths at a hospice center in Ohio when the phone rang. It was a health care worker, calling to schedule her first appointment for a coronavirus shot.

Drewes’ daughter Laura Brown was stunned by the timing of the call in January but didn’t lash out over the phone or even explain that her 75-year-old mom was at the point of death. There just wasn’t any point, she said.

“But me and my sister were upset that it came too late,” Brown said. “It seemed like the final insult.”

More than 247,000 people have died of COVID-19 in the U.S. since vaccines first became available mid-December. Officials had warned that dispensing enough vaccines to reach herd immunity would take months. And with the initial vaccine supply extremely limited and the virus running rampant across the nation over the winter, it was a sad reality that some would contract COVID-19 and die before they could be inoculated.

Because of so many morons not masking and refusing to get vaccinated.

Hopefully, more of these morons get it and die than people who want still are taking precautions and want to be vaccinated.

no one that has been vaccinated has been hospitalized or died so far. So that's very good news. In a couple of months, after everyone who wants a vaccine has gotten one, it will be Darwinism in action as the only deaths will likely be the anti-vaxx assholes.

But not enough are vaccinated yet to prevent those who want the vaccine from getting CV. It will be several months before that happens.

That is assuming 25% or so refuse, which may be high or low but is in the ballpark I believe.

That may come up a little short of herd immunity, so we may have to wait for natural infections to get the rest of the way there.

If the vaccines start to wear off after the 6 month mark, we may never get there. In that case, we'll see a plateauing effect with outbreaks again and again. At that point it is endemic.

to protect against new variants and the already vaccinated will get those too.

I see us becoming two nations. One where most everyone is vaccinated and the other where they are not and they will continue to have wave after wave after wave and not taking any precautions to stop it. They will be like Brazil.

I expect some degree of apathy will kick in when the conversation turns to annual boosters though.

Hopefully the message that this is a patriotic thing and not a partisan thing gets out there and resonates. We really need that messaging from the top. Here at the bottom, it just comes across as vaccine-shaming and nosiness.

repeatedly engages in risky behavior and has for months. She goes out to eat, has gotten massages and gotten her hair cut and colored months ago. It just stuns me the level of willful stupidity in this woman. By her own admission she is stubborn and opinionated. Last night she drove 50 + miles to have dinner with friends in a nearby resort town. She is what I would call an evangelical — light. She talks the talk, voted for tRump and Matt Gaetz. But loves a nicely made margarita or Chardonnay and at times has a salty tongue. She is willing to roll the dice with her own health every time she goes out, but refuses to acknowledge that and has now stopped wearing a mask. I don’t know what she does at her school. 🤷🏻?♀️

The systems are gamed by many youngers as they become eligible. WSJ recently published an article of "tricks" that could be used to garner an appointment online -- to the detriment of many others who are more vulnerable to disease and death from the virus.

I doubt if the government even knows how many have given up.
