(He taught my father to do this at a young age.)
Grandpa came here to the US about 1915 and could only get a job as a hotel clerk.
Most Irish immigrants were not able to read or write. The British overlords had forbidden literacy among the Irish
"peasants." Luckily my grandfather was literate. Grandpa did eventually became the head hotel clerk in a large well known Boston hotel. But he was still horribly underemployed for his skill and educational level.
The majority of his grandchildren have advanced degrees and achieved success in their career fields.
My Irish grandparents would be absolutely astounded to see all of this.
Especially to see the women with advanced degrees.
