NJ Gov Going After Georgia's Corps to Relocate

I laughed my head off when I heard this: Gov. Murphy, our terrific Democratic progressive governor, is going after Georgia corporations.

He sent a letter to Netflix, Disney, and Warner Bros that said:

"If you are looking to expand, relocate, or consolidate, we respectfully invite you to come experience all that the Garden State has to offer, including our shared values of protecting the constitutionally granted rights of our citizens."

The Democratic governor sent a letter Thursday to major production companies, including Walt Disney Co., Warner Bros. and Netflix, offering up to 40% in subsidies.

Murphy sent his letter two days after he signed early voting into law — with Georgian activist and former gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams — which he has been touting all week.

In the letter, which was obtained by the Trenton bureau of the USA TODAY Network Atlantic Group, Murphy presented New Jersey as a progressive contrast to Georgia.

I love it that my governor is taking advantage of Kemp et al and their blow to the voting rights of the citizenry. However, there is a leftie think tank here that doesn't think it's such a great idea. It quotes studies that say that these types of tax incentives don't pay out all that well. An example is "studies in two states with film tax credits that showed "a terrible return on investment for taxpayers." In Louisiana, the state got back 36 cents for every dollar spent on tax credits; Massachusetts saw an even lower return, 14 cents for every dollar. "

Still, it is a return. Just not a great return. I wonder what other types of incentives would be better to lure these companies away.

1. Bad idea. Race to the bottom. Voting rights shouldn't be a matter of "the best bid."

It's just not a great investment. Read the latter part of the article and the progressive institute explains it more than I was able to do with my legal # of snips.

It's a long shot. I think the best thing it's doing is aggravating Kemp, which is priceless.

not necessarily the tax breaks. I think what you are confusing is that Murphy is doing it to put pressure on Kemp and if he were to get a corporation to move (that isn't going to happen), it would be great. But that won't happen.

It's a pressure move on behalf of voting rights.

Just heard a story on the radio. The NJ tax breaks are already in place, and are similar to Georgia's. I wanted to clarify that.

What he's saying to companies: you'd have the same tax breaks but be in a state that respects the right of people to vote.

BTW this week early voting was passed in NJ.

And one more btw: I have never waited more than minutes to vote in NJ and I've been voting here for decades, every single election. I have never seen a line to vote in any neighborhood, nor have I ever seen a story about lines to get to vote.
