Oddly, one of the things that their ignorance did was make the actual origin of “French” fries more well known.

Wiki

Freedom fries was a politically motivated renaming for French fries in the United States. The term was created in February 2003 in a North Carolina restaurant, and was widely publicized a month later when the then Republican Chairman of the Committee on House Administration, Bob Ney, renamed the menu item in three Congressional cafeterias. The political renaming occurred in context of France's opposition to the proposed invasion of Iraq. Although some restaurants around the nation followed the renaming, the term became unpopular, in part due to declining support for the Iraq War. Following Ney's resignation as Chairman in 2006, the change in congressional cafeterias was reverted.

(Snip)

On March 11, 2003, Republican U.S. Representatives Bob Ney and Walter B. Jones directed the three House cafeterias to change all references to French fries and French toast on menus, and replace them with Freedom fries and Freedom toast, respectively. Jones chose to follow Cubbie's example by circulating a letter to his colleagues advocating their renaming because, he said, "the French were 'sitting on the sidelines'".[4][7] As Ney was Chairman of the United States House Committee on House Administration, the action did not require any vote, as the committee has authority over House cafeterias. According to a statement released by Ney, the renaming was intended to express displeasure with France's "continued refusal to stand with their U.S. allies". The statement further read: "This action today is a small but symbolic effort to show the strong displeasure many on Capitol Hill have with our so-called ally, France."[8] When asked about his view on the change, Jones said it was a "lighthearted gesture".[9]
ReactionsEdit

In response to the change, French Embassy spokeswoman Nathalie Loiseau commented "It's exactly a non-issue ... We focus on the serious issues",[10] and noted that fries originated in Belgium.[11] She then remarked that France's position on the change was that they were "in a very serious moment dealing with very serious issues, and we are not focusing on the name [Americans] give to potatoes".[12] After the name reversal, an Embassy spokeswoman said: "our relations are definitely much more important than potatoes ... and our relations are back on track".[4]

In the 19th century, the United States received some 5 million German immigrants, many of whom settled in the Midwest to buy farms or become tradesmen and professionals in cities. By the early 1900s, they were the largest immigrant group in the country and had become highly respected members of their communities.

But that changed when the United States entered World War I. Patriotism and paranoia swept through the country, and German-Americans suddenly found themselves the targets of intense scrutiny.

Some of the country’s reactions to German-Americans seem almost farcical in hindsight. In the same way that french fries became “Freedom Fries” 15 years ago — when the French government withheld support for U.S. military action in Iraq — sauerkraut became “Liberty Cabbage” and hamburger was called “Liberty Steak” during World War I. Frankfurters were renamed “Liberty Sausage” before they became plain old hot dogs.

Newspapers started to report outbreaks of German measles as “Liberty Measles.” Dachshunds were called “Liberty Pups,” and German shepherds became “Alsatian Wolf Dogs.”

19th century German immigrants. She was a very young child when her parents brought her and her siblngs to America. By the time of the first World War, she was a naturalized citizen and a married woman with her own children. She and her children were spat on when she took them out for a walk during the runup to US entry into the war. She shielded her children from rocks thrown at them by other children by taking the brunt of the blows as she rushed her kids home.

In this period, Americans also burned German language books in the US in "patriotic" bonfire demonstrations.

The early and medieval Christians hid, burned or destroyed the works of Democritus, arguably one of the smartest human to ever live.

The fragments of his writings we have left are brilliant - he postulated the atom, and wrote about everything from the origin of human beings, artistic perspective, mathematics, anthropology, biology, medicine, cosmology, poetry, physics, and atomic theory.

Because his views and scientific method of relying on facts and experience not theology, were not compatible with Christian Doctrine, all were lost or destroyed by the early 'saints (fanatics much like those today) and the 'holy' Church in favor of Plato whose work was more compatible with Christian Doctrine.

A millenium and more would pass before Galileo and Newton took up where he left off.

Who Was Democritus?
DECEMBER 11, 2015 BY MATT WILLIAMS

...

And along the way, many names stand out as examples of people who achieved breakthroughs and helped lay the foundations of our modern understanding. One such person is Democritus, an ancient Greek philosopher who is viewed by many as being the “father of modern science”. This is due to his theory of universe that is made up of tiny “atoms”, which bears a striking resemblance to modern atomic theory.

Though he is typically viewed as one of Greece’s many pre-Socratic natural philosopher, many historians have argued that he is more rightly classified as a scientist, at least when compared to his contemporaries.

...

In the tradition of the atomists, Democritus was a thoroughgoing materialists who viewed the world in terms of natural laws and causes. This differentiated him from other Greek philosophers like Plato and Aristotle, for whom philosophy was more teleological in nature – i.e. more concerned with the purpose of events rather than the causes, as well things like essence, the soul, and final causes.

According to the many descriptions and anecdotes about Democritus, he was known for his modesty, simplicity, and commitment to his studies. One story claims he blinded himself on purpose in order to be less distracted by worldly affairs (which is believed to be apocryphal). He was also known for his sense of humor and is commonly referred to as the “Laughing Philosopher” – for his capacity to laugh at human folly. To his fellow citizens, he was also known as “The Mocker”.

Scientific Contributions:
Democritus is also known for having spent much of his life experimenting with and examining plants and minerals. Similar to his work in mathematics and geometry, citations from existing works are used to infer the existence of works on the subject. These include On the Nature of Man, the two-volume collection On Flesh, On Mind, On the Senses, On Flavors, On Colors, Causes concerned with Seeds and Plants and Fruits, and to the three-volume collection Causes concerned with Animals.

...

Democritus is renowned for being a pioneer of mathematics and geometry. He was among the first Greek philosophers to observe that a cone or pyramid has one-third the volume of a cylinder or prism with the same base and height. While none of his works on the subject survived the Middle Ages, his mathematical proofs are derived from other works with contain extensive citations to titles like On Numbers, On Geometrics, On Tangencies, On Mapping, and On Irrationals.
...

Ultimately, Democritus is credited as being one of the founders of the modern science because his methods and theories closely resemble those of modern astronomers and physicists. And while his version of the atomic model differs greatly from our modern conceptions, his work was of undoubted value, and was a step in an ongoing process that included such scientists as John Dalton, Neils Bohr and even Albert Einstein.

This article is from the same person

Canceling a person, place, or thing is socially mediated phenomena with origins in queer communities of color. Black Twitter—the meta-network of culturally connected communities on the microblogging site (Clark, 2015)—made the language of being “canceled” into an internet meme (Shifman, 2013). The reference was subsequently seized upon by outside observers, particularly journalists with an outsized ability to amplify the(ir own) white gaze. Politicians, pundits, celebrities, academics, and everyday people alike have narrativized being canceled into a moral panic akin to actual harm, adding a neologic twist on the origin of the practice by associating it with an unfounded fear of censorship and Canceling a person, place, or thing is socially silencing. But being canceled—a designation, it should be noted, usually reserved for celebrities, brands, and otherwise out-of-reach figures—should be read as a last-ditch appeal for justice.

(Snip)

Don’t take “cancel culture” discourse at face value

Cancel culture is a rhetorical device strategically use to gaslight people who make valid complaints about discrimination and oppression. Gaslighting is a form of manipulation meant to undermine the subjectivity of an other. The gaslighter's target doesn't have to feel crazy—they just need everyone else watching to agree that their target's position is so completely without merit that it doesn't warrant a good faith argument. Gaslighting is about (1) manipulating the circumstances; (2) avoiding real, effective engagement with the argument; and (3) preserving the (unequal) status quo. Intent is irrevelant when labeling gaslighting; it’s about gaslighting as a strategy and its impact.

Being “cancelled” doesn't have an official definition; that’s part of the problem. The vagueness gives the term more power, allowing more people to appropriate it for personal means. Addressing cries of cancel culture at face value is a losing game of whack-a-mole where a million different people with a million different visions of what cancel culture is keep popping up—you may hit a few on the head to make them disappear, but you never actually win the game.

French fries becoming freedom fries because France didn't want to go along with our illegal invasion of Iraq.

Also, conservatives tend to buy things in order to cancel them publicly - like French wine during Iraq. Conservatives bought a lot of bottles of French wine to pour them out in the street. During the D&D scare of the 80s, if their kids didn't play it, conservative parents would buy D&D stuff to publicly burn it.

I looked but couldn't find an early Bloom County cartoon where the local leader of the Moral Majority, Otis Oracle, wants to hold a book burning so he and his followers go to the music store to buy 30 dozen Blondie records, asking the clerk if she was "laden with moral turpitude." They made the purchase after he said he didn't know what he meant, but she was, "one wicked chick." It summed up their stupidity nicely.

Back in the late 60's the Smothers Brothers had a wildly popular show called the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour. It was sort of a mixed bag of music, comedy skits and some standup comedy. It was very hip and we baby-boomers loved their show, but so did many of our parents.

Of course the Smothers Brothers were outspoken against the Vietnam War - as we all were in those days - and the Republicans/Conservatives had an absolute fit. Nasty letter campaigns, boycotting the sponsors' products, phone calls to the media, op-eds in the newspapers - all did their trick and the Smothers' Brothers show was cancelled after one year, even though their ratings were very high.

That's the first time "cancel culture" politics came into play, even though we didn't use that term.
