Why is he late? is he coming? Where is he?
O, he got a flat on the way here. crap
Ok, so he is changing it real quick? with the spare and gonna be a few minutes late?... how long did it take me to jack up the car, turn the nuggs, pull flat off, slam the spare on and nugg it back up again when i got a flat the last time?
20 mins?
what is your record you guys? like a pit stop at the indy 500? its almost like a challenge for us men right? al bundy? shush women!! us men are changing the tire!! meanwhile screwing it up... lol
anyway.... so unfortunately Justin did not have a spare tire in his car.... so he wont be joinin.........wait what????
thats a joke right? haha funny brother. no really when is he coming?
ummm no he really didnt have a spare tire in the back of his car so he cant make easter sunday dinner with his family this year.............
because a lot of newer cars dont have spares in them...... apparently?
that cant be true can it?
doesn't every car have a spare in it? i'm not kidding lol
i guess not?
so we were short one family member this easter because no spare and he didnt think ahead maybe to toss one in there anyway just in case.

(45,481 posts)Many kids these days don't know how to change a tire. They rely on their cell phone to summon help. My Dad won't let my sister get her license until she could change a tire (back in the mid 70s.)

(14,856 posts)I always check the spare and tools before I take a road trip, but so far I've been lucky, and never had anything worse than a slow leak that I could fill and drive to the tire shop for repair or replacement.

(68,556 posts)parents who live way out there...and he watched a you tube video. He did have a spare. He changed the tire. This kid is amazing. He took my daughters espresso machine apart and gave it a good cleaning when it wouldn't run put one part in it ...don't know what and voila it worked. I spend $300. fixing mine last year. He reminds me of my Dad that fixed everything. We only had one toaster, on refrigerator, one stove, one washing machine and dryer...you name it and he fixed it. By the way, I don't have a spare...no room in the car. And the tire bolts are so tight that I doubt I could ever get them off anyway.

I swear the horse was laughing at us as we switched out tires.

It's crazy to me, but the thinking is that new tires are so good that a spare is just wasted space and weight
Of course if he has an old beater like I do, it's all on him

Kinda scary.

(3,156 posts)with tire pressure monitoring sensors, you are more likely to notice a leak and address it before you have a flat.
also, many people tend to drive too far and too fast on their donut spare. this doesn't sit well with many differentials. the mismatch in diameter causes the diff to spin parts that are not meant to spin constantly, some cars are ok, some are not tolerant of this for very long. similarly, the car can handle quite unpredictably in an emergency situation.
many drivers won't change their own tire under any circumstances anyway.
most of us drive the same commute, and flats are just not that common anymore, so might as well save the weight/space, etc. and in the off chance you do have a flat, roadside assistance will take care of it anyway, might as well install a correct new tire and be done with it.
heck, all of my cars are over 50 years old, i only carry a spare on long trips.
keithsw
(436 posts)That works until you can get a car. Unless that has changed in the last couple years. My car is a 2020 and my wife has a 2019 and we both got them

(8,445 posts)A couple of weeks ago I was leaving a store and saw a couple of young women looking at their tire, discussing the fact that it was flat. VERY flat. One said something about the rim, and then they got in and drove away. So, I dunno about that.
Which reminds me of another story. Quite a few years ago one of my step-son's friends was very drunk, borrowed a friend's car, and apparently hit a curb. Whatever the case, she apparently blew a tire. This was in the very wee hours of the morning. She kept driving. The car was found the next morning, burned up, with her inside it.
obamanut2012
(26,068 posts)Many, and soon it will be most, cars no longer come with any spare, so maybe you should educate yourself.
And, maybe your nephew didn't want to go to a superspreader event during Covid, which makes him the smart one in the family.

(65,010 posts)We agree on almost everything, but not this.
The whole point of mass vaccinations is to enhance immunity & reduce spread.
If 5 of 6 people are vaccinated (83.33%), how would this be a super spreader event?
I've been in 14 schools since September. None of them had even 0.6% of student/staff population get COVID. And, until recently, nobody was vaccinated, particularly those thousands of kids under 16.
If schools (I know, not all schools) can function 5 days a week, 7 hours a day without being super spreader sites, I don't see how a dinner with a vax rate of >83% would be.
Just dumb. This is not the time to have large family gatherings.

You aren't wearing masks either, since you are eating. You are inviting people of different ages, so highly unlikely everyone is vaccinated.

(1,204 posts)My Chevy Volt does not have any spare tire, not even a donut. And I'll have to check, but I don't think there's a can of Inflate.
Silent3
(15,210 posts)...when I first got a flat. I'd hit a pothole in the dark that I didn't see coming, and it ripped through the sidewall of my tire. That's when I discovered I had no spare, just a tire repair kit, useless for this situation.
Another time I was very slowly backing up, and my tires rubbed up against the curb. Sidewalls ripped again, even though this was at VERY slow speed, on TWO tires!
Good thing in that case I was just two houses away from home, so it was more comfortable waiting for someone to come to the rescue.
This all happened, three blown-out tires, within the first year of owning the Volt. That's either an incredible streak of bad luck, or the tires were shitty tires with very weak sidewalls. Fortunately about another year and a half has passed without incident.

(1,828 posts)do not come with a full size spare tire, they come with a tire that in NY is called a "donut". You can drive up to 70 miles on it. It is just for emergencies.
obamanut2012
(26,068 posts)Zero. Including our two newer cars. I have never had a full size spare within 30 years of driving, except for my first car, a VW, and zero spare since 2013.

(12,422 posts)The downside is that after the first overnight cold snap of winter, that's usually the tire that triggers the tire pressure warning light.
MineralMan
(146,288 posts)Just a can of goo and a small air compressor. We drove it for seven years without a single flat. The 2020 Soul we bought, which was one trim level higher, came with a spare. That's why we have AAA. Of course, since there is a spare, I'd change to it and go on.

(5,294 posts)so when I bought it to replace my previous Prius (which had to be replaced after 9.5 years and 160k+ miles due to rodent damage), i kept the full-sized tire I'd upgraded the donut with, and bought it a nice cover. When I'm driving the major highways in Oregon, I just take my chances, and trust the warranty roadside assistance and my AAA membership. When I travel long distances on secondary highways, I load the spare into the backseat and count on its Murphy Magic.
Vinca
(50,269 posts)And here I thought I had problems because I have yet to figure out how to get the cover off the spare tire on the back of the RAV. The previous ones had a latch. The manual talks about a latch. There is no latch.

(575 posts)I had a 2008 Escort that had no spare but came with an air compressor and a can of expired (by the time I bought the car) Fix a Flat.
Thankfully I never had to use either. I was always uneasy and really never want to buy another car without a spare tire.

(3,469 posts)Prior to the current Tesla, my cars had run flats on them. I'm SOL with the Tesla if I get a flat, so they provide roadside assistance and even have vans that are fully stocked with tires and they'll come to you to replace your tire. You have to pay for the new tire of course.

(34,136 posts)My husband and I were running errands Saturday afternoon. we took the truck since one stop was to get the last of the plants for our garden. Before we left home, I commented that the back passenger side tire looked a little low. At the nursery, it looked a little lower. We only had two more stops, so I suggested that we stop at the tire store in between those two.
Good thing - we had a screw in the sidewall. My plan was to have them put the spare on and leave the flat tire to pick up Monday - it was quarter to five on Saturday before a holiday and the place was slammed. They looked at the spare and said no way - the tire had been manufactured in 2001 - before I even bought the truck!
So we ended up buying two new tires, putting the good back tire in for the spare, and waiting while they did it. I gotta say, those guys were efficient. They didn't pull our truck in until 5:30 and we were out of the place by 5:45.
You know, I don't know if my Honda Fit even has a spare - I'll have to check the manual. But that is probably why Honda sold me a road service plan with the new car - so I don't have to worry about having a spare.
