By Leia Idli Apr 5th, 2021, 11:28 am
Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) penned a brutal letter to Commissioner of Baseball Rob Manfred, calling his decision to move this years All-Star game from Atlanta hypocrisy, as hes a member of a famed Georgia golf club.
-snip-
I write to ask you whether you intend to maintain your membership at Augusta National Golf Club, Rubio wrote in a letter to the commissioner. As you are well aware, the exclusive members-only club is located in the State of Georgia.

Augusta National boasts a highly secretive membership said to total approximately 300 people mostly titans of industry from throughout the country. The club reportedly did not admit a Black member until 1990, and did not admit a female until 2012 when it added Condoleezza Rice and another woman to its roster.
Rubio not only blasted Manfred for his own ties to Georgia but also questioned if MLB would end its engagement with nations that do not hold elections at all like China and Cuba?
Rubio also questioned if the MLB will end their relationship with the Chinese Government, which at this very moment is committing genocide against the Uyghurs Muslims in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region (XUAR).
I am, of course, under no expectation any of this will happen, wrote Rubio. Taking the All-Star game out of Georgia is an easy way to signal virtues without significant financial fallout.

(82,849 posts)But if the membership at the racist and sexist Augusta National Golf Club is secret, how does Sen. Rubio know that Manfred is a member? But I leave it to Rubio to recognize an easy way to dog-whistle his base without significant financial or electoral fallout.

(21,555 posts)if Manfred has a membership to Augusta he holds that as an individual, not a representative of MLB. Sure the distinction is not that complicated to understand.

Tartuffe is a sanctimonious scoundrel who, professing extreme piety, is taken into the household of Orgon, a wealthy man. Under the guise of ministering to the familys spiritual and moral needs, he almost destroys Orgons family. Elmire, Orgons wife, sees through Tartuffes wicked hypocrisy and exposes him.

(7,844 posts)quit the Augusta National Country Club in counter protest to pulling the MLB All-Star Game and Amateur Draft?...what does one have to do with other?...both the game and draft are not annual Georgia events...MLB is a business and they choose the venue and as such can pull it at their will...as for the club membership...the Augusta club is a private big ticket members-only club in Georgia...Manfred is a paying member and if he remains a member or drops his membership, well, that his personal choice...Coca Cola and Delta are not relocating but they, belatedly, are putting pressure on Kemp and his fellow white supremacists to reverse their abhorrent voter suppression law..Rubio's stupidity is matched only by his fellow Floridian Gaetz

(2,636 posts)If it weren't tMaster's week, Rubio wouldn't have dragged golf into it. Augusta National isn't writing laws to suppress anyone's vote. Augusta is a private entity, just like baseball is a private entertainment business, and the government can't regulate their corporate free speech. The GOP wanted it that way. Corporations are people, after all.
When called out, Augusta admitted both a Black member, and a female. They didn't need advertising that year, and the coverage was magnificent. While I thought old Hootie was an ass, the PGA is not the problem here.
Marco is looking at China, and Communists, and now the golf tour, none of whom is making it harder for people to vote in the numbers they did in 2020. Anything but admit there is no fraud. Anything to distract and stay relevant.
He's grandstanding with false equivalencies. Tiger Woods and Jackie Robinson. He can shut it any time now/
