'People hate us': Racist prank calls, fake orders threaten Tea 'N' Bowl Chinese restaurant

Yvonne Low and her husband, Joe, have worked hard to keep their Clifton restaurant, Tea ’N’ Bowl, open through the COVID-19 pandemic. The University of Cincinnati’s switch to remote learning cost them essential foot traffic from students — the lifeblood of most businesses in a crowded neighborhood where parking is scarce. They adapted.

But this spring, racist phone calls and fake orders began pouring in, costing the Low family time, money and supplies. Low is worried she’ll have to close her restaurant for good to escape the harassment.

“I’m not sure whether to stay open anymore, because people hate us,” she said. “And then, with all this… My mom is in Malaysia. They are so worried, seeing everything that’s happening. They say, ‘Just close it.’”...

This is not the only Chinese Restaurant in the Greater Cincinnati Area to face this. This just saddens my the lengths of cruelty some racist assholes will go to. If you like Chinese food please support them.

“Can someone give me a Chinese restaurant that will answer their phone and deliver,” wrote Tammy Lynn Feliciano on Facebook.

It’s not surprising that fans of the delivery staple are having a hard time finding an open restaurant. According to Womply, a credit card processing company, 59% of Chinese restaurants have closed during the pandemic across the US. This is a huge percentage compared to other styles of restaurants.

The style of restaurant with the second-highest closure rate is mixed menus quick-service with 15% closures. Only 10% of pizza restaurants closed with chicken-based restaurants closing at a similar 9%. The most resilient type of restaurant is chicken wing specialists as only 8% of them have closed across the nation. The study was released in April so things may have changed but market experts expect these trends to hold throughout the pandemic.

Some areas are even worse off than the national statistic. In New York City, Wellington Chen, executive director of Manhattan’s Chinatown Partnership Local Development Corporation has stated that only 40 out of 270 restaurants in Chinatown remain open for business.

Similarly, Malcolm Yeung, executive director of San Francisco’s Chinatown Community Development Center stated that only 40 of the 150 restaurants in Chinatown are open.

It’s bad enough these a@@holes and their “my freedoms” bull 💩 has contributed greatly to 560,000+ Americans dead and extending this pandemic much longer then it should have, now this. They just never stop with their bull💩. I am at / been at the end of my rope with these people. Life is tough enough as it is...there’s no reason to be a dick and make worse. FFS.

a few years when the office conversions started. Chinatown was a short walk away and always a great place for lunch or dinner, or even a wee hours snack.

It's not purely discrimination, but real estate pressures, incursions from Little Italy next door, population dispersion to Queens and New Jersey. Even the Fulton Fish Market moving to the Bronx hurt.

But, whatever the reasons, to hear that Chinatown is hurting is saddening.
