Biden's Infrastructure Ideas Are Popular, His Plan Less So

April 6, 2021 at 1:24 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard

A new Reuters/Ipsos poll finds President Joe Biden’s $2 trillion infrastructure plan is loaded with initiatives that are widely popular on their own, but public support declines when the initiatives are sold as a Biden-backed plan.

For instance, 79% support an overhaul of highways and bridges, 71% want high speed internet access, 68% want to replace lead pipes and 66% back renewable energy. In additon, 64% supported a tax hike on corporations to pay for the plan and 56% supported ending tax breaks for the fossil fuel industry.

However, just 45% of Americans said they would support an infrastructure plan that was “recently released by the Biden administration.”

We saw the same phenomenon when polling “Obamacare” vs. the “Affordable Care Act.”

the policies are viewed in a favorable light by the majority of people. People need to sharpen up. Fix that—the Joe Conservatives need to sharpen up.

5. Those numbers may not say what you think they say

When the numbers go down like that when they're connected to the person putting forth the program, what you may really be seeing is the knee-jerk reaction of some segments of the population to hate on anything associated with the Democrats, rather than lowered support for the proposal overall.

For example if you ask people about how much they like it that insurance companies can't deny benefits for pre-existing conditions, you'll probably get approval numbers north of 80% if not 90%. Then ask them if they like the Obamacare provision that stopped insurance company denials of coverage for pre-existing conditions, and watch the numbers drop. It doesn't mean people don't like the idea, they've just been taught to hate any proposals put forward by Democrats.

In other words, ignore the carping from the right wing. Keep doing the right thing.
