12. Not a surprise -- they're Democrats!

The days of booing at the words "Democratic establishment," booing at people like John Lewis, mindless cynicism that everyone's corrupt and Wall Street and corporations control everything and Democrats are all "centrists/moderates/corporatists" are over! Finally!

15. Now if we could only get people to stop

bashing independents who work harder for democratic principles than some Democrats, and realize that it isn't all cynicism. Maybe we'll see an end to sharp-stick poking. It certainly serves no useful purpose.

Biden is popular because he's doing good and it is realized. It is a very pleasant surprise, and shouldn't be used to be dismissive of some groups of liberals I doubt that same high level of popularity would be there if he had followed a "third-way" or "centrist" policy. .

Let's be glad that we have a decent person in office who is willing to work his ass off for Americans. Those who want to antagonize someone should redirect that toward the Democrat who relishes publicly standing in our way.

50. By definition,

something unexpected is "a surprise" to some degree.

It's good that some apparently read Biden's mind and, knowing in advance exactly what he planned to do, therefore weren't surprised.

For the rest of us, it certainly was something of a surprise and a very welcome one. I hope he keeps it up.

45. Thank you

This is how I feel too.

I was very surprised that Biden was willing to move in the direction he has after being told for months that he would be a middle of the road "centrist". As you said, I doubt he'd be as popular as he is had he gone in that direction.

And the takeaway from the article is that both Biden and Sanders are popular, not that "Biden is 3 points more popular"!

48. Some people are STILL sticking their heads in the sand

about the position of "corporate Democrats", and apparently don't realize that YES corporations and billionaires WANT to control everything. They won't stop trying. They already own the republicon party lock, stock and barrel. It's silly to think they are content with that.

It's up to us to keep that from happening. Ignoring it will only help them.

57. If it's up to us to stop "corporations and billionaires" why promote "both sides"?

Why discourage support for the Democratic Party, the progressive party? Why tell people Democrats are corrupt, ignore the working and middle classes, only care out money from corporate and wealthy donors? The only way to stop Republicans is get more Democrats in office and convincing people that Democrats are corrupt doesn't help.

No, the goal for those people is to defeat Democrats. Whether they really believe the party isn't progressive and must be taken over and transformed, want a revolution, or use these anti-Democratic insults for their own purposes, doesn't matter. Results are the same. Some politicians use populism to win elections, but there are unfortunate consequences.

For example, Justice Democrats' emails are all about evil "corporate Democrats." Republicans aren't mentioned very often. It's clear who the enemy is, who they must "take on."

Corporations and billionaires don't have superpowers. Regulate and tax them, that's what Democrats do. These silly insults don't help make this happen.

Bernie is helping a lot, and to get into this silliness is very silly...

Let us continue supporting everyone who helps move the Democratic agenda forward, it is a very good agenda, and progressives like AOC, Bernie, etc. are helping a lot, so please, dismiss this idiocy, it may be a plant by republicans to "divide and conquer".

47. As said,

the article isn't about Sanders being disliked, or liked less, but that Biden is now increasingly liked by Sanders supporters. They're BOTH liked.

Some are apparently such small people that they can't pass up a chance to antagonize The Left or take a shot at Sanders. They foolishly overlook the simple fact that Biden's increasing popularity in general is due to his liberal policy. A surprisingly and unexpected liberal policy. He's a genuinely decent caring human being, but that doesn't get you far politically.

Again, they're BOTH liked. Deservedly so. Biden has earned the approval. If he keeps up the liberal policy agenda, his popularity will only increase. Because of that, not in spite of that.

35. Um....

old progressivism? Hi, Betsuni. Not looking for a fight. I'm very happy with Joe, surprised and happy. But you have to consider that Bernie did help nudge Joe to the left. and that felt nudge is at least a part of Joe's popularity. He has earned it. Wed Apr 7, 2021, 05:33 AM

36. You mean old progressivism pre-FDR?

"The original progressive movement ended when FDR became President in 1933. Progressives wanted to end wealth inequality and provide good education and decent jobs for everyone. Generally, they wanted to do this by making Capitalism fairer -- busting up the monopolies and trusts of the robber barons; allowing labor unions; and limiting the workday, the workweek, and child labor. They won women the right to vote and the progressive income tax. They also brought us Prohibition. All this brought about a radical change in thinking -- the repudiation of individualism and laissez-faire capitalism. But it did not include government spending for the general welfare. That's where FDR's liberalism comes in. FDR liberalism was the next step after progressivism. ... Recently, the term progressive has been revived and has changed meaning."

Steven Stoft, "Ripped Apart"

Biden is following the tradition of liberal Democrats like FDR and LBJ. Nobody has to nudge Democrats to the left. They're there already and when they have the votes they pass progressive legislation.

Like i said, not here to argue. I've never been into it, and i've never been good at it, and i'm too old to learn new tricks. We disagree on minor details in the big picture. If i offended you or anybody with a soft jab at Joe that i suspect he himself would smile at, I apologize. I think Joe and Bernie very much like and respect each other on many levels. I remember that you and I have always had good and kindly exchanges and i'd like to have it remain that way. I am still wallowing like a pig in the sweet mud of Joe's walloping of the Demon. "I think Joe and Bernie very much like and respect each other on many levels." Joe knows politics and how to deal with problems and he has done so.

"Minor details" have been made out to be major ideological differences (corrupt, neoliberal, corporatist, status quo, PAC money, wealthy donors, etc.).

I'm old too, but I have common sense.

eta: Ari Melber Says Biden Increasingly Sounds Like ‘The New Bernie’

MSNBC’s Ari Melber said on Tuesday that President Joe Biden, “at times, can sound a bit like the new Bernie [Sanders]” — addressing the president’s increasingly progressive views throughout his political career.

“Joe Biden has begun his presidency on a more liberal footing than the last two Democratic presidents, which makes this the most progressive start to any presidency in the past 40 years,” Melber said, noting that Biden is “pushing for a cumulative $4 trillion in total spending in his first 100 days.”

Comparing today’s Biden to the Biden of the 1990s, Melber played several clips from his time as a self-described “centrist” senator.

“More cops, more prisons, more physical protection for the people,” he said in one clip from November 1993, later adding, “We have predators on our streets.”
