The attack on the Capitol was a race riot. We should talk about it with that understanding.

New from me: I wrote about the new Pape study of the Jan. 6 insurrectionists and what it means for the GOP

Bottom line up front: the attack on the Capitol was a race riot. We should talk about it with that understanding.

protected by his Republican, Christian Right and kleptocrat cabals?

I don't know who-all's behind this restyling from far-right, fascistic treason threatening the entire nation to a disgraceful race riot by a few that only killed a white policeman.

But we do know it benefits those who are taking notes from this failed coup and planning a second, successful takeover. So I suspect they are (also) behind this pernicious spin.

Let's not be unbelievably stupid, please. We can't hide from this and pretend only some are being targeted. My grandsons and your loved ones were born free citizens; if we fail, they will live their lives in fear and degraded obedience in a far-right police state.

Where they would be forced to walk quickly by as others were beaten and kidnapped off the street, or have it happen to them and theirs.

It was sedition. The sedition may have been motivated in part by racism, but it is sedition.

Why complicate matters. You will only confuse people.

This is the title: Pro-Trump whites afraid of being replaced attacked the Capitol. That's a race riot. Without seeing the title it is a leap to make the connection.

It is a throwback in some ways. Since the sixties, 'race riot' has come to mean 'unrest in black neighborhoods', but prior to that, from the Draft Riots in New York during the Civil War, through to the great wave of racial violence after WWI and beyond, a 'race riot' was a violent attack on black people by white people, and the general motivation of the white mobs was a perception blacks were getting out of hand, threatening white power, whether economic or political or both. To the sort of person who turned out for this riot at our Capitol, the Democratic Party is the party for people of color, and hostile to white people accordingly. A victory for Democrats is a victory for 'the coloreds', and a blow against white prestige and power. That cannot be borne, and must be reversed.
