(3,698 posts)The two tribes among USa (sic) reflect the duality of divergent lives informed by faith or by fear, whether in politics, civics, or personal tics.
The world can be accepted as dangerous and inimical to one or as neutral or welcoming by another.
Personalities reflect beliefs in different operational models of self in relation to world. For some all the world is subjectively perceived as foreign and dangerous.
For others all the world is objectively taken as familiar and benign.

(43,128 posts)Paranoia and fear go hand-in-glove. They believe they are the chosen ones, the privileged, the best and brightest. But many things are greater than they. No that's not right. All things are greater than they.
So their defense mechanism against their inconsequential selves who aren't all they're cracked up to be, is fear of the unknown and the paranoia it generates.
This is a cult response to life itself. It drives all cults.

(20,666 posts)Whatever. Some brains are just afraid, and they join together to reinforce it in each other.
Lots of research pointing to it in the last 20 years. Read Anderson Thomas: Why We Believe In Gods
I heard his live lecture a month ago. Incredible.

(12,421 posts)They are spoiled children in the political sphere because they have failed to accept the role of hero in their politics, thinking that in this one facet of their lives, at least, they need infinite protection and everything should belong to them. The classic hero faces challenges and accepts the losses incurred in meeting them because in return they win a level of self-sufficiency and self-understanding that gives them not only personal freedom but the opportunity to transform the world into a safer place for the innocent. The corrupt reject this role, instead continuing the self-centered worldview of the infant, despite being afforded the powers and privileges of a grown-ass adult, and demand their needs be met and their persons protected from an ever-widening class of fearful things.
Why do we liberals give a damn about immigrant children we may never see, while right-wingers view them as a threat, or at least the disposable victims of their own parents' ambition? Because liberals can't be content while the innocent suffer, and right-wingers can't be content unless even the tiniest threat to their complacency is destroyed.

Republican leadership? They're not afraid. They've got their hands around the neck of America, and on the verge of squeezing the life out of it. Exactly where they want to be.

Ignorance, fear of the unknown, and limited exposure to others. Since they know and experience so little, anything outside their limited sphere scares them.

(10,749 posts)I commented that the only thing "those people" have left anymore is hate.
Maybe the other "only" thing they have is fear.
The why is almost easy to discern. For 40 years that's all they've been told - fear and hate. We - that's a collective we the people, the nation - is reaping what republicans beginning with Reagan (at least in recent history) have sown. The government is not here to help. The government is bad. "The other" is bad, evil. Black, Brown, Muslim, Jew, Gay, Trans, Immigrant. They are to be feared, not embraced. Hated, not welcomed.
And since no one on the right has the courage to say enough is enough, the feedback loop for the fearful and the haters is louder and louder. They will hear nothing else and will be open to no other perspective.

Whenever I read something like this OP, I'm reminded of Will McAvoy (Jeff Daniels) using the phrase in said rant "...and we didn't scare so easily."

(6,181 posts)They both want noneducated minds to manipulate. All they want is to stay in power to enrich themselves.
Ask yourself how can a congress member earning say $180,000 per year become a multi-millionaire.
The numbers do not add up in my mind.
We need public financing and term limits.
Serving in Congress should not be seen as the gateway to becoming a millionaire it should be serving the NEEDS of ALL their constituents not just the ones who can make them rich.
