Georgia Governor Suggests Voters Waiting In Long Lines Order Uber Eats

Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp said Tuesday voters waiting in line in Georgia could order food from Grubhub or UberEats after a new state law criminalized offers of free food and water near polling stations.

“They can order a pizza,” Kemp said on the conservative cable news network Newsmax. “They can order Grubhub or UberEats, right?”

A new law in the state, pushed by Republicans who have echoed former President Donald Trump’s false assertions of widespread voter fraud in the 2020 elections, makes sweeping changes to election rules in Georgia. Among the law’s provisions is a rule barring anyone other than election workers from offering food or water to voters within 150 feet of a polling place.

Even within the 150 feet "electioneering" boundary at voting places. Sorry: if that's permissible, water and snacks within that boundary are too.

Kemp: when I hear you talk and compare it to the amazing Stacey Abrams, there is no comparison. You are a trump bootlicker, and he dissed you royally. What is pathetic is your "please, Sir, can I have another" attitude a la Animal House. You are a very strange person.

I for one would gladly donate to Uber or Grubhub deliveries to those waiting to do their civic duty. Be careful what you ask for asshat, maybe taco trucks will be coming.

Unless the food is offered by election workers...how are those election workers going to hand out food and water, if they're dealing with people voting?

The text of the law says, "nor shall any person give, offer to give, or participate in the giving of any money or gifts, including, but not limited to, food and drink, to an elector."

Or is Kemp saying that drivers for Grubhub and Uber Eats aren't persons? Because the plain language of the statute would make Kemp's assertion to his pals on Newsmax one of those - Whaddya call 'em? - a lie.

That's this slimeball's out.
Stuff delivered by UE or GH, isn't being given, it's being sold.
My question: somebody set's up shop 200' from the poll.
Volunteers take turns holding places in line while voters go to that "out of the perimeter" location, get some water, use a portajohn, then go back to where the "placeholder" is standing. Volunteer goes back to start & they keep doing this all day.
No law would appear to be broken, as long as the "givers" are assiduously careful about not discussing anything political.

...the state has to pay for the food and water. Pass legislation.

The problem is not voter fraud. The problem is the long lines. That is the definition of voter suppression.

that food, water, etc., — that is not connected to soliciting votes — is permissible. Read the way it’s written.

Don’t think it’s worth trying that for giggles, but if I take my grandma water, and get arrested, I’ll try it.

Besides, people can take their own water and people can request/demand polling places provide it. GOPers get thirsty too.

Also, it has long been against Georgia law to wear campaign clothing to the polls. And KKKemp has been a POS long before this latest utterance.

it has to do something to shorten those lines by the next election. Doesn't do anything for current election, but does for future election.

Here is some language from law.

If, at the previous general election, a precinct contained more than 2,000 electors and
722 if electors desiring to vote on the day of the election had to wait in line for more than one
723 hour before checking in to vote, the superintendent shall either reduce the size of such
724 precinct so that it shall contain not more than 2,000 electors in accordance with the
725 procedures prescribed by this chapter for the division, alteration, and consolidation of
726 precincts no later than 60 days before the next general election or provide additional voting
727 equipment or poll workers, or both, before the next general election. For administering this
728 Code section, the chief manager of a precinct which contained more than 2,000 electors at
729 the previous general election shall submit a report thereof to the superintendent of the
730 reported time from entering the line to checking in to vote. Such wait time shall be
731 measured no fewer than three different times throughout the day (in the morning, at
732 midday, and prior to the close of polls) and such results shall be recorded on a form provided by the Secretary of State. Any such change in the boundaries of a precinct shall
734 conform with the requirements of subsection (a) of Code Section 21-2-261.1."
. . . . . .

It would really help if people read this legislation.

https://www.legis.ga.gov/api/legislation/document/20212022/201121

Worth noting that in 2020, the wait times on November 3 were not that long -- mainly because so many voted by mail and during early voting.

Fortunately, I think both Stacy Abrams and Atlanta Mayor Bottoms have read the law and realize that the sooner we quit fretting and start getting info out to voters, we can beat these GOPers again.

The worst thing the law does is perpetuate trump's lies about the election was stolen. The second worst aspect is that the state COULD take some actions after an election to help folks like trump in the future, but they could have done that after Nov 3rd. I remain confident they won't get away with that. With all that said, would love to see the law struck down by Courts, but not counting on that.

A partner walks along the line and gives each person one penny. A minute later, a second "vendor" offers to sell water for one cent.

The first person did not give away food. The second person didn't either.

Please recycle those bottles responsibly!

and give drink to the thirsty. Since the Supreme Court has upheld the rights of religious people who object to certain laws to ignore them, all Christians should be able to offer water and snacks to people waiting in long lines.
