(6,849 posts)Between elections he's the quiet Democrat unless there's occasion to instruct Democrats on how they should behave in public. He has made channelling the spirit of Robert Byrd a sexennial art form. To change the current form of the filibuster would place him closer to.the Democratic camp than he or his constituents would find comfortable. He's not a principalled man, you see.

(58,785 posts)Democratic Party issues. They want to pass bills that cut taxes and stack the judiciary with party servants, which only require simple majorities; i.e., they don't need the filibuster for those.
Otoh, Democrats typically want to PASS, not block, a lot more of the kind of bills that require 60 votes (usually nonbudget, nonjudicial appointment issues), like, oh, gun control laws.
So the filibuster is far more useful to the Republicans than to Democrats. And that's why you don't see us using it the way they do.
