Under Trump, the mainstream media started to more critically examine RW media talking points and narratives, which tried to minimize the impact of the pandemic and praise Republican demands to reopen and ignore social distancing requirements.
However, now that we once again have competent government, the mainstream media is once again falling into the lazy habit of letting right wing media set the narrative. For example, we are still in the middle of a pandemic, with issues such as climate change, infrastructure, health care, etc., needing to be resolved.
Yet, what is the mainstream media doing? Focusing on RW headlines such as "border invasion" and "immigrant crisis." Who needs Trump to waste millions sending the military to the Mexican border near the midterm elections as a campaign prop when you have Ted Cruz and Newsmax engaging in the same publicity stunt.
Republicans were happy to ignore immigrants on the border and detainees under Trump, but now they are simultaneously raising alarm about an "invasion" or immigrants on the border while also complaining about the treatment of unaccompanied children, which Republicans paradoxically blame on Biden being too "nice."
It is a bunch of racist posturing, yet the mainstream media is once again following along and ignoring issues such as the pandemic that affect the safety and welfare of millions of Americans.

(82,849 posts)Every little scrap, every development, becomes a several days' item to be covered, and coverage renewed whenever new footage comes in. NBC's tone has matched the GOP's, as if this "crisis" just sprang fully formed in the last 10 weeks.
I'm glad that the Biden administration is on this problem, because it has a chance of resolution rather than kept alive for Republican political convenience (remember the Caravans of Doom that were approaching the border just as elections were being held in 2018 and 2020). The administration is actually talking to (instead of bullying) the leaders in Mexico, El Salvador, Honduras, and Nicaragua, but somehow that doesn't quite make into the on-air reporting.
Once the cool competence of the Biden administration gains the upper hand on this, look for the reporting to vanish like dew on a summer morning.
