(Taking no sides on recent revelations, just noting)

99 years though. Definitely unprecedented (historical) longevity for a Royal male.

It's pretty sad I mean I'm conflicted just because of the whole controversy surrounding Meghan and Harry.

33 years ago, the Queen’s husband spoke on the topic of reincarnation, and what he would come back as if such a thing existed. He said: “In the event that I am reincarnated, I would like to return as a deadly virus, to contribute something to solving overpopulation.”

The Duke made the remarks when speaking to when speaking to German news agency Deutsche Press Agentur. Prince Philip retired from all public duties in 2017, and now spends most of his time at Sandringham. The Duke has made a number of gaffes during his many decades of public service. A few of his most controversial are copied below:

Heroically:

Hargreaves was a yeoman aboard the destroyer HMS Wallace on which Philip, son of Prince Andrew of Greece, had been appointed first lieutenant - second-in-command - at the age of 21. In July 1943, engaged in the Allied landings in Sicily, the ship came under repeated bombardment at dead of night and its crew realised that they would probably lose their lives.

It was then Philip conjured up a plan to throw overboard a wooden raft with smoke floats that would create the illusion of debris ablaze on the water. As he hoped, the German plane was fooled into attacking the raft while the Wallace sailed to safety under cover of darkness.

I had immense respect for him. I am going to picture him, once again reunited with his beloved Uncle Louie (Lord Mountbatten), who was another man for whom I had immense respect. I was fortunate enough to see both of them, in person, during the Queen's Silver Jubilee.

I only knew them from the press reports. While my politics are Democratic, I see the many many people who the two represented, in particular the men and women of the Royal Navy.

Hood Crew, 1940

This photo is from the H.M.S. Hood Association Archives. It shows Captain Glennie and a large number of the crew. This is believed to be the last full crew photo ever taken of the ship and her men. Though many of the men pictured here were later transferred, it should still be noted that most of the men shown here were probably lost in the sinking of the ship. If you can help identify any of the men (or have a clearer copy you can send us), please let us know.

All but three of the Hood’s crew were lost battling K. Bismarck.

Where the Brits, everyday Brits, stared down the Nazi threats on a daily basis and came together as a nation in quite a miraculous way. The French (and much of Europe) gave up quickly. While the Brits said, fuck you. It was the British resolve that got the US into the war. Had they given up, we would have had to take a different approach to defending ourselves. And the world might be a different place today.
