General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsHaven't been to the nearby grocery store (Giant) for two weeks.
Went today and found that all but two cashiers were gone and six spanking brand new self checkout stations had replaced the four checkout lines. Only one lane with a cashier and one person working the service counter. WHAT!!??? Does not look good for employment numbers.

(82,849 posts)We resolutely get into the line with a live checker. When some "helpful" person points out that there's no line at the self checkout, we ask how much the store is willing to pay us for doing their job. That usually ends the conversation, but we have noticed that these little pilot programs don't last if everyone is willing to wait for a live checker. Stories of customer dissatisfaction with self checkout get back to the powers that be.

(16,844 posts)The only time I use the self-checkout is when I have one or two items. Like you, I feel like I shouldn't have to ring up my order and bag it too.

(113,259 posts)First, for the jobs. Second, I HATE machines talking to me. And third, because I enjoy being able to talk with the checkers and courtesy clerks, some of whom I have known for years.

(130,865 posts)which I've visited 3-4 times a week since the beginning of our misery.
They did some major changes inside, locations of stuff moved but most staff and customers seem to be handling it well.
Still just one self-check out area, and 3-4 cashiers usually working.
Will see what's up soon (I hope,) as my car's been 'out of service,) so hope to get back to my (one and only) shopping place soon.

(34,438 posts)If you have a lot of groceries, youre probably not as fast as an employee at scanning them. And, each time Ive used them, when Ive had only a few things, something has malfunctioned, requiring a human being to come over and reset the machine.

I likewise refuse to use them.

(50,261 posts)the local store seems to have had a problem recently in being staffed to meet needs and if it's between my ice cream melting or the self checkout, I scan my own stuff. I think the store where I shop has cameras on them to prevent theft. In any case, the one time I discovered I had something I hadn't paid for (2 boxes of Band-Aids stuck together), I brought one of them back. Darn honest libtards. LOL.

But they won't stop. They'll just complain that the "others" are taking all their jobs while waiting in the self-checkout line without a hint of the irony.

(9,259 posts)Theres the small self-serve stations and they made about 5 of the former regular lanes into big self-serve stations that apparently are to check out your own large shopping trip. Ill use self-serve for a couple things but not my big weekly shopping. Not many people do as those lanes are usually empty. Perhaps they thought people would prefer to not have a cashier breathing on them. This store is actually pretty responsive to customer needs and they bring on another cashier if the line is more than 2 or 3 deep.

I've learned that, in spite of my summer high school job as a bagger (pre-plastic), that I too
am incapable of doing it correctly. I lived to 50 before we hooked up 20 years ago, and I'm not
sure how I did it without her guidance. Or she's not sure.
The self check out lanes have weighted tables to prevent stealing. I never steal. To me it's the worst.
