Joe Frater and Chris Stone were on their way to social media stardom in the elite world of trophy deer hunting.

The two law enforcement officers — Frater is a corrections officer at a local prison; Stone is an investigator for the Amador County district attorney — regularly showed off their trophies from just a few years of hunting with bows and arrows in the Sierra foothills of Northern California.

They posed with impressive, mature bucks that they somehow managed to pull from a place known mostly for its scrawny deer with tiny racks.
The men appeared on hunting websites, podcasts and YouTube videos, and they had sponsorships with companies that sell hunting equipment.

-------------

"The caliber/type of deer is very rare for a legal CA hunter to harvest, especially with only using archery equipment," Game Warden David Moskat wrote in a 2019 search warrant. "I have known many archery and rifle hunters who would be satisfied to harvest even one of this caliber of buck in a lifetime of legal hunting in California."

-----------

After weeks of stakeouts both day and night, they raided the two men's homes, going room to room, rifling through drawers, freezers and closets, seizing deer-head trophies, archery equipment, cellphones, frozen venison, computers, trail camera memory cards, and taxidermy and butcher receipts.

At Frater's home, they seized salt licks, mineral blocks and bags of feed, the sorts of bait used to lure in deer.

Interesting story! They were treated fairly--maybe even more than they should have been. CaliforniaPeggy Apr 2021 #1
White "law enforcement officers" also comes to mind. TreasonousBastard Apr 2021 #2

The phrase "white men's privilege" comes to mind.

Even in majority black cities, police departments oddly seem to mostly, if not all, white.

which most 'sportsman' consider kind of bush league -- if not outright chickensh*t. (and specifically illegal in CA) But these guys were kinda' heavily into the brag factor, and d*ck measuring. Social media hounds. In other words -- not exactly the classiest dudes to start out with. But boy -- the state went after these guys with a vengeance! Too bad the AG didn't see it as much of a case. Allowed them to plead out to single counts, small fines. This would have been a good opportunity to serve up a lesson to other 'slob hunters.'

They never really pay a price. The lack of respect for nature will bite us all in the ass, even those of us trying to keep assholes like these guys from destroying it all. I'm just glad I'm old, hope I won't be around for the epic biospheric crash that's coming.
