AKRON, Ohio Akron released body-cam footage Thursday showing a police officer, who resigned amid an internal use-of-force investigation, shove snow repeatedly into the face of a man accused of domestic violence while other officers handcuffed him, after which the man said he couldnt breathe.
Officer John Turnure, who worked for Akron since 2009, voluntarily resigned effective March 31, while the investigation into the Feb. 7 incident was on-going.

(658 posts)That really both angered and scared the crap out of me. This guy thought it was okay to smother a human being. He's an officer of the law. He was hired to be an officer of the law. He was trained to be an officer of the law. He was aided by other officers of the law. John Turnure needs to be convicted of a crime, but all of the officers who aided him in the arrest should, at least, be fired and should never be allowed to hold a position of any authority.
Until the police are held to a standard by which they routinely police themselves, this type of thing will never change.
Thankfully the accused didn't die.

All of a sudden, he died from "natural causes" because the murder weapon melted.

(2,636 posts)The officers hand on the man's face, forcing it into the crunchy snow is an awful lot of downward force.
After seeing the Irish Pulmonologist's analysis of Police behavior, I watch this with absolute horror.
Six cops gang tackled a man on his front porch. For what?
There is no difference between cops and criminals. It's not one or two rogue cops. It's criminals with badges torturing others because they can.
Tom Cotton recently said we aren't arresting and incarcerating enough people in this country. Here's six cops asking to be jailed.

(90,762 posts)The footage can be a help to the victims of police brutality (or their families) - after-the-fact. After you're dead, or maimed forever.
Just pondering on the body cams and how little they seem to effect change in police behavior.

(32,445 posts)"The use of force by Officer Turnure, must be judged using an objective reasonableness standard. Objective versus subjective examining the officers intent. Reasonableness is incapable of precise definition and is a range of reasonableness. The question is, would a reasonably prudent and well-trained officer have done what Officer Turnure did in those exact same circumstances. The use of force must be judged at the moment, based on whether perceptions were reasonable, and the totality of the circumstances faced by Officer Turnure the suspect was 6 foot tall and 200 lbs., was muscular, under the influence of alcohol, he had been involved in a domestic violence incident wherein he had threatened his girlfriend with a knife, he made threats that officers would have to kill him, and resisted arrest until such time he was forcibly taken down to the snow covered ground, and later handcuffed. According to case law and APD policy, force is not to be judged in the 20/20 vision of hindsight. Further, Officer Turnures need not use the least intrusive option available.
