The driver is described by the BBC only as a 66-year-old man with Spanish and Swiss citizenship, who lives in Spain. His passenger was an 88-year-old man who had been dead for roughly three weeks and was decomposing, the report said. The body was covered with a blanket and wearing a seat belt.

Police came across the pair Thursday when the car being driven by the former turned around upon reaching a checkpoint at the French border, then drove 19 miles back into Spain on the wrong side of the expressway. French and Spanish drivers both travel on the right side of the road.

The driver left the motorway and pulled onto a local road, where he was pulled-over by authorities. The sexagenarian wasn’t clear about why he began driving against the flow of traffic, but he reportedly described his rotting passenger as someone he “loved very much.”
