General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsDo you believe Americans should forget about what happened on January 6th and move on?
After all, we still have a ways to go with defeating this virus.
Also, our economy has not recovered to where we need to be.
We should simply let Donald Trump and his brand slide into oblivion and move forward on more important matters?
Except for the most violent offenders, the Capitol insurrectionists should be pardoned with a probation period, and we should put it all behind us?
It would be a waste of time to try and charge any political leaders in the insurrection?
We should just forget the January 6th attack upon our Capitol.
Do you think that would be best?

(43,049 posts)so, yes we can walk and chew gum.
There are forces trying to upend the republic we have had for over 200 years, and we can't just sit back and watch.
This, too, shall pass, as have other horrors, but we can't just sit back and watch. We must assist in its passing.

(16,236 posts)We should never move on and forget what happened on January 6th.
All the people involved should be held accountable for their choices and should face appropriate consequences.
To do less is to basically give carte blanche to future insurrectionists-in-waiting.
We must never forget.

(6,309 posts).... the course of action is to do both. We have to move on and get things done, but that doesn't mean forgetting what happened on January 6th. It certainly doesn't have to be one or the other.

(125,711 posts)They've been pursuing extremists more and more since the 1960s: Tricky Dick recruited Dixiecrats; St Ronnie of Alzheimer wanted more evangelical racists; Gingrich sought to add everyone with a mean streak; then W and Don Corona followed suit
They've aimed to bar moderate judges from the bench since the Clinton era; and they've been trying voter suppression and gerry-mandering more and more year by year
6 January shouldn't have been a surprise to anyone, and neither should the wingnut legislative avalanche that's followed

(26,455 posts)They broke into The Capitol after they'd fought with the
Capitol, and Metro police. Inside they fought with a few more police. They physicaly messed up the place as well.
People ebded up nastily injured, and dead.
Some of them were actively trying to hunt down Democrats, (Bernie too), and while no fan - VP Pence. A potential gallows constructed.
And while the Confederate Battle Flag never never made into the Capitol in the Civil War -
there it was for all to see since the former guy turned racism from a dog whistle into a train, or fog horn. They all came out from under the rocks because of this "permission" these past 5 years.
Actions usually have consequences, especially as hideous as these. And especially with government officials still in office who supported it!

(7,596 posts)I will never forget that an American president incited a violent attack against his own country and that several elected officials from his party helped him incite it by shamelessly enabling his deranged conspiracy theories.
Mo Brooks, one of the despicable motherfuckers who helped create this attempted coup, is currently running to be a United States senator. Some of the others responsible for this assault on democracy are contemplating running for president in 2024.
This is not normal and no one should forget it or accept it.

(3,149 posts)these reThugs unless we defeat them. These anarchists and the dotard in chief used the power of repetition to get a majority of reThugs to believe in the Big Lie to the detriment of all. We must use the same power of repetition to beat into the ground their falsehoods, coupled with the power of the justice department to jail those involved.

(24,939 posts)There's a lot we have to deal with but until the people involved in this- from top to bottom- are held accountable, we can't just "move on". We didn't just "move on" after 9/11. I assume that this question is being asked in good faith but no.

(15,207 posts)A failed insurrection is always a "test run" or learning experience for those involved.
ALWAYS.
It "failed" Jan 6th. It won't fail next time if ignored or swept under the White Hysteria rug.
And it will be far worse for the rest of us. The insurrectionists are terrified of Liberals and POC - enough that they're willing to kill to keep their power.
