Have a friend who lives in Belfast we walked around by the peace wall and she showed me the gate at the end of the road, it was wide open of course when I was there.

We walked on both sides as she told me stories from her past. She told me its sad on both sides and that she has friends on both. But her family is on the catholic side.

Northern Ireland voted to stay with Europe but all of the UK voted and Brexit won. So there are many who don't agree with all that is happening and there is nothing they can do since the vote.

I can't begin to imagine if they ever had border stops, it is like they are together now you just drive in from one side or the other or take a train.

They have a little tourist village about the famine to teach the story and after being there you almost hate the British for starving them and burning their houses. Even decades after the troubles you can tell no one is forgetting.

My ancestors are from near Belfast and Donegal.

This is an example of failed British imperialism. Wherever they went in their colonial endeavors they left discord and destruction. They divided lands and people, and created dysfunctional places( ie., Iraq), all in their quest for oil and real estate. Many still suffer and bear the results of their policies. BTW, the prince whatever his name that just passed had never offered any charitable deeds, significant goodwill or beneficience to the world, despite his immense wealth and standing. Britain has been a terrorist nation throughout history, or as Sinead O’Connor sang, not the “mythical land of madame George and roses”...

I was hopeful just a few years ago.

By the way, the throwing styles of the fire-bomb throwers is also cringeworthy to me. I could regularly throw a baseball over 400 feet in my youth, so I could give them some pointers if they're going to do it anyway.

I'd still think torque from the body and leading leg could be effectively used. I've seen poor techniques from rock-throwing protestors over there too. Figured it's from them mostly playing football (soccer).

It's obviously a minor point compared to the violence and mayhem, so I don't want to dwell on my aside comment.

Edit: Not important, but the lads that I just saw on CNN are doing much better.

They supported the police when the "enemy" was the Nationalists, but now they feel betrayed by Brexit and the people who were supposed to keep them in power. But now they feel the mainland doesn't really consider them all that "British" (or really consider them at all) and they are afraid they are losing their culture and identity. (Again, sound familiar?) The violence is just being turned on the traditional enemy out of frustration.
In reality, the main difference between the two groups is the labels they put on themselves; identity politics of the worst sort.

Except as useful idiots or cannon fodder. The rest of the Irish are another species, or might as well be. It's the leftovers of the empire-building mindset.
