Made a doughnut run this morning and at the bakery and I heard my name called here it was a friend I knew from years ago. He was standing there dressed in his Pennsylvania department of corrections uniform and we caught up in couple minutes talking. Anyway I knew this guy from Red star express a union freight company I went to after Preston 151 went under in 99 , anyway he was always a relaxed dude easy going we used to run road together we were on Boston well Billerica mass run and we always shot shit at night over Cb.
I told him after red star I went roadway left after the yellow freight merger and they got pension relief in paying.25 cents a hour instead of $10 to 40 hours week into pension vulture capitalism to help company survive that was supposed to be for 4 years now they still raping the Union workers 13 years in. So I bailed and went to where Im at now a Union freight outfit that pension is in the black.
Seventeen years in corrections has changed this dude he went to prison academy in 04 after red star went under. We chatted a bit outside in bakery he was letting racial slurs fly and I said hey lets step outside I know the young ladies at bakery. My point is I remember him being totally for Al gore when election was stolen by hanging chads. And today dude is hardcore right wing on his car he had trump 2020. I mentioned it to my wife when I got home Im like wow a career in corrections changed this guys politics.

Not like a prison guard would be a stressful career or anything like that.
What strikes me as funny though, he's depending on a government system to be there for his pension. Isn't that a form of socialism?
Or did PA go privatized prisons?

My impression was, both the guards and the inmates had way to much time on their hands and spent most of it plotting how to screw with the other side. It was a game.

(6,917 posts)In addition to the career on corrections he is a faceless victim of vulture capitalism eliminating his employment.
Making people hungry and destitute turns some into desperate, willing-to-exploit-others-because-Ive-been-screwed-over faux victims.
All they need is a hero to rescue them from their carefully-planned plight by immoral corporations. Enter the last guy. Hes gone, but the smell of victimhood remains. And his victims all have Stockholm syndrome.
Welcome to the 2021 Republican Party platform.

(3,657 posts)I became more liberal. I knew a lot of Correction Officers. Rarely, did I respect or like one. Many love to abuse inmates, even in the most subtle ways. It was often said, the only difference between a guard and an inmate, was the color of their shirts. The worst guards, used their positions, to smuggle in drugs and make money off the inmates. OxyContin demanded a high price

(14,853 posts)If the guy was a prison guard among only angry white inmates, perhaps he would've become even more liberal?
Feeling threatened and disrespected by a small segment of the population can cause many people to over-generalize.
There's often racism and segregation among the prisoners themselves, with gangs based on race, so I suspect many of them are projecting those same attitudes towards the guards too.
If a guard doesn't have the fortitude to resist getting pulled into such generalized and simplistic thinking, he might "pick a side" too -- like many Trump supporters.

(4,552 posts)The lies corporate America told to end pensions is amazing.
I can remember being a young man in my 30s and coming out of a meeting where the company gave us a 401k. An older union brother said to me well that is the end of pensions. I just shook my head at the grouchy old union brother. He was 100% correct.
I am now collecting the pension I earned with that company. It is not very big because they ran away from the union as soon as they could. I do give the company credit for being honest and continuing to fund the pension.
