Jim Clyburn, the House majority whip, said on Sunday he intends to give Joe Manchin a lesson in US history as he attempts to clear a path for Joe Biden on voting rights and infrastructure.
Manchin, a moderate Democratic senator from West Virginia, has emerged as a significant obstacle to the presidents ambitious proposals by insisting he will not vote to reform or end the Senate filibuster, which demands a super-majority for legislation to pass, to allow key measures passage through the 50-50 chamber on a simple majority basis.
His stance has drawn praise from Republicans: Mitch McConnell, the Senate minority leader, hailed Manchin as the politician almost singlehandedly preserving the Senate. But Democrats appear to be losing patience and none more vociferously than Clyburn.
Im going to remind the senator exactly why the Senate came into being, Clyburn, from South Carolina, told CNNs State of the Union, refreshing criticism of Manchin that has included saying he feels insulted by his refusal to fully embrace voting rights reform.

(47,940 posts)I'm ashamed to be white when my own party can't secure voting rights for African American people and others. We are letting all the people who struggled and died down for some imagined "bipartisanship." I wish to God that word had never been invented.

(9,068 posts)Manchin won his last election with 49% of the vote. He will be hard pressed to win again, especially if the Republicans there pass a voter suppression law similar to Georgia.
I really don't think he has a lot to lose by going all in with Biden. Who knows, it may even help him. West Virginia certainly need the money the infrastructure bill will provide, along with a whole lot of jobs for former coal workers that will also come into the state as part of the build back. And they certainly could use a higher minimum wage and better health care.
Blocking Biden's legislative initiatives isn't going to help Manchin one bit. It's not going to ingratiate him with the Republicans, they'll still see him as the enemy.
And, even if Manchin loses his re-election bid in 2024, he would at least have the satisfaction of knowing he did the right thing for his constituents.
I hope Clyburn can get through to him.

(58,785 posts)to portray half the Democrats in congress as as conservative as Manchin.
Now, Jim Clyburn is a "moderate liberal" or "moderate Democrat" in the middle of the very large main (liberal) bloc . Not at the right edge of the party like Manchin.
