Community reacts to 'disturbing racist scene' with Moline HS Football team

MOLINE, Ill. (KWQC) - Community members shared their sadness, anger, and shock Saturday after a viral video which Moline Police described as a “disturbing racist scene” surfaced from the Moline High School football team Friday.

In a release from Moline Chief of Police Darren Gault, he said “We all agree that regardless if the students viewed this as a joke, it is unacceptable behavior...This is a teaching moment for everyone and a reminder that we can do better. We can treat people better. We can be better friends. We can be better teammates. We can be better people. “We can also stand up and confront situations when they are wrong. In doing so we can raise our morals and increase the respect we have for each other end.”

For Tracy Singleton, who started the non-profit Well Suited which helps mentor young men, she found the situation unfortunately familiar.

“You could see it in his face like I could see it in his face like I don’t know who he is, I don’t know his family but I know the look because I’ve seen it in my own son’s eyes so I just felt so bad for him” Singleton said, “And then I felt anger.”

The 5 were disbarred from the team, a lawsuit was filed. Other info on the lawsuit is nonexistent... well, there was one reference to the KKK enactment being a freedom of speech issue. Do you know what happened with the lawsuit? One set of parents made a public apology, but that was all the reaction I read from families.

I'm very concerned that so many parents today protect their children from accountability rather than teaching them decency and holding the kids responsible when they behave indecently. I could cite instances of my father demanding that we own up to a mistake or wrongdoing and pay the consequences... and when he let us slide. Even then, I knew which was the better parenting!

Remember, several years ago, a high school senior English teacher failed a huge number of her students' term papers when she found out where they were plagiarized from? The parents had conniptions,
Saying that their children had never been taught that borrowing another's words verbatim as their own, was cheating. They demanded the school fire the teacher.

Do you know what happened to the lawsuit? Also, what became of the quarterback? College?

It does look like the community swept it under the rug. Boys will be boys and all that. Town is a fair distance from mine.
