The officer, at absolute best, fucked up. But we clearly have a huge systemic problem. This is way more than the specifics of one case. It’s not one bad apple. It’s widespread and keeps happening, and victim blaming is not helpful. Again, too many cases where PoC were killed by cops while doing absolutely everything “right”, but whatever these circumstances, most of these cases do not require lethal force. Cop’s job is not to be judge, jury, and executioner.

who have been murdered. Remember Philando Castille? Also in Minnesota.

He was literally complying with the cop's order to pull out his wallet, telling him what he was doing as he did it...and the cop shot him to death.

There are plenty of others. Why did the kid flee? Because he was afraid. Why did the Lt. not get out of the car, because he was afraid.

Why were they afraid? Because cops kill black people regularly and most of the time it is excused. Like this time: 'OOPSIE! I shot him with the wrong thing!'

This young man called his mom when he was being stopped, because he thought there was a good chance he'd end up dead.

You know what white privilege is? It is seeing a cop behind you and not thinking that you are very likely about to be killed.

relative to their white counterparts for (1) black and brown flight to be the cause and (2) for it to be unreasonable for black and brown people to fear for their lives in such encounters.

When you are afraid for your life, and your options are to attempt to flee to safety and be shot fleeting - or - to stay put and potentially be subjected to deadly force - there are no good options.

By saying we need to keep in mind the thousands of non-deadly encounters every day, that is in effect minimizing or dismissing this deadly incident and many others. It’s like we should not care about this murder because such a high percentage of incidents do not result in the loss of life. That’s absurd.

We have a significant problem in this country when massive numbers of people in this country fear for their lives whenever a police officer approaches them because we have so many racist, angry and incompetent police officers in this country. I would not be surprised if some of them take the job simply for the opportunity to kill minorities. The Klan in this country simply traded in their white robes and hoods for blue uniforms and badges.

In what Bizzaro world should any man, black, white, blue, green, polka dot, get stopped for an air freshener violation by police and not walk the freak away from it?
