(2,527 posts)And they aren't all that reliable. In order to be effective the electric barbs need to be near or touching skin and the barbs need to be around a foot apart when they hit. It seems 7-10 feet the ideal distance. If a barb misses, the electrical circuit isn't complete and the taser does nothing. Too close, and too few muscles are disrupted by the current and it may not be effective. Thick clothing may cause the barbs to be too far away from the skin. The wires only extend out about 20 feet. Some models may go as far as 35.

(16,480 posts)A gun and a taser feel very different. The officer was standing back pulling the trigger on the taser. You would think the officer would be close enough to actually use a taser if that was her intention. Plus another officer was in front of her so it makes little sense.

Kick in to the DU tip jar?
This week we're running a special pop-up mini fund drive. From Monday through Friday we're going ad-free for all registered members, and we're asking you to kick in to the DU tip jar to support the site and keep us financially healthy.
As a bonus, making a contribution will allow you to leave kudos for another DU member, and at the end of the week we'll recognize the DUers who you think make this community great.
