(129,730 posts)He had outstanding warrants for nonviolent crimes. It wasn't like they were trying to arrest a known serial killer. They could have just let him go and busted him at home.

(15,751 posts)EXPLAINER: How does an officer use a gun instead of a Taser?
https://omaha.com/news/national/explainer-how-does...
1 hour ago · This is the case in Brooklyn Center, where Gannon, the police chief, said officers are trained to carry a handgun on their dominant side and their stun gun on their weak side.

(27,422 posts)One of the many reason I dont carry a gun around is because the only way it would be of any use in say, a mugging or a car jacking, is to have a round in the chamber and the safety off.
Cops have no choice but to carry their weapon in ready to go status.

(38,930 posts)you just pull the trigger. I have another Ruger LC9s 9mm that has a safety. It is done in the movies looks cool I guess. The street gang guys in the movies always shoot their gun sideways don't get that either.

(38,930 posts)hundred rounds fired and nobody got hit. They used the sideways shooting technique I think.

(11,866 posts)They had a 9mm Glock and the went through a box of ammunition. All three used the sideways, one hand, grip. 50 rounds at 7 yards. No hits.

(18,328 posts)99.99% of LEO weapons are carried with a round in the chamber, ready to fire.
Most LEO weapons don't even have a manual safety to de-activate before firing, they use "Passive safeties" like a sensor looking for a finger on the trigger.
