https://kstp.com/news/bca-identifies-officer-in-daunte-wright-shooting/6073236/The BCA identified the long-time veteran of the Brooklyn Center Police Department as Officer Kim Potter.
Potter is on standard administrative leave.
On Monday, the police chief said he believed that the shooting was accidental and that the officer thought she fired her taser instead of her handgun.
She's got 25+ years of experience and is the president of the Brooklyn Center Police Officer's Association. BC cops have killed people before, and she represented them in administrative hearings.

Officer should be fired and investigated to see if charges are warranted.
Its just sad all around, especially for the victims family.

(54,770 posts)Just trying to add some emphasis, Grinder. If you dont like it, say so.
Do you think the officer should be thrown in jail, tried for murder, and sentenced to life when she clearly thought she was holding a Taser? She may have been impaired, preoccupied, sick, mentally ill, etc., but it was an error, but hardly an inconsequential one.

(20,482 posts)other than police statements, that the officer believed she was holding a taser?

(54,770 posts)seconds over which it occurred, her yelling taser, taser, her anguish after.
What leads you too believe otherwise?
Admittedly, she may have been impaired, too old to be in that position, improperly trained, stupid, neurologically deficient, confused, or whatever. But I believe she thought she had a taser.

(16,646 posts)One is left wondering how often this "mistake" was made before, but she just never pulled the trigger. These weapons are supposed to be worn on opposite sides, and they are of significantly different weight. It is really hard to understand without including the idea of basically carelessness or capriciousness.
Hoyt
(54,770 posts)responsible for training her, setting policy for traffic stops, etc. Maybe shes just too old for that job, impaired, too stupid, etc. I dont know.
It all happened in 2 seconds.

(22,308 posts)What the video showed me is that she yelled "taser taser taser" several times. It's not clear from the video what she was thinking.
Hoyt
(54,770 posts)kid, hold/aim the gun like a taser, yell taser taser, cry out in anguish afterwards, knowing she was going to shoot the kid for kicks.
She should have been retired years ago.
But shes not the problem here, its misguided police policies that allow these kind of BS stops that precipitate chaotic situations.

(22,308 posts)They go through their day understanding that in the end, their mission is protecting property, subduing fugitives, punishing when necessary. If it takes a thousand volts of electricity or a bullet, then that's what it takes, especially when it comes to Black, brown or otherwise marginalized people. They've already made the plan.
Hoyt
(54,770 posts)if she knew she had a gun.
Shes clearly over the hill, stupid, perhaps mentally impaired, etc. But I believe she thought she had a taser.
I also believe that rather than crucify her, we focus on policies that allow these type of stops, hiring of unqualified people, etc.
WhiskeyGrinder
(22,308 posts)That's not like you, Hoyt. Not when it comes to guns.
Hoyt
(54,770 posts)is just stupid, is delusional, was on good mushrooms, or what.
I said the system that allows these BS stops is wrong.
You are the one attempting to crucify her. Its bigger than her error. I think we agree on that.

(32,653 posts)Is that really all it takes to kill someone in cold blood?
And let's say she's telling the truth--that she really is that stupid, incompetent, and reckless--why the FUCK did she fire her "taser" at him? Was he a threat?
Hoyt
(54,770 posts)I guess you think that in less than 2 seconds, she concocted a plan to kill the innocent kid, yell taser taser, scream in anguish, etc.
Most likely the officer was too old, too stupid, psychologically impaired, maybe medically impaired, etc., to still be on the streets.
Those that allow this type of policing are responsible.

(20,482 posts)Those are the magic words to get away with beating someone.
I guess TASER! is the magic word to shoot someone.

(14,121 posts)Taser mounted on the hip of the weak hand (usually the left),... gun mounted on the hip of the stronger hand (usually the right).
She did not mix this up.
She got so excited and thrilled about making the arrest,. she over reacted,..
then when it appeared the arrestee.might get away. She got more excited and took the over reaction up another notch,... and she shot the kid dead.
Then when she was making out the incident report she realized how insane and senseless what she caused to happen was,.. so she concocted the lame ass bullshit story saying her intent was to shoot the kid with the Taser not the much heavier high powered hand gun.
Oops,... but not my fault.

(4,575 posts)Taser, taser, taser indeed. At first I thought she made a mistake but after watching the video and thinking about it, no.
